Is this something I could do myself? |
|
I'm rapidly running out of hard drive space. I have opened up my computer and installed additional RAM and a CD burner.
How much more difficult to install another hard drive? I'd like to keep the drive I have now and just slave a new one to it. And how do I know what kind of drive to buy? All my computer says about my hard drive is "Generic IDE disk type47."
Is this something I should just leave to the professionals? I called a repair shop and they said they would install a new 40Gig drive for 70 bucks total. Is that a good deal?
I bow before you computer gurus. :yourock:

1. It can be tricky sometimes. |
|
You'll need to know a little bit about how IDE works: understand how the terms primary, secondary, master, and slave all go together. But after that, it's pretty straightforward. $70 installed is not that bad for a 40 Gig, though.

2. It should be pretty easy... |
|
Depending on what you've got hooked up so far, what OS you're using and how your first drive is formatted.
40GB is small by today's standards.
I'm sure we can give you more pointers if you give us more specifics. I am not a computer guru, but I do this kinda thing all the time.

4. It's a lot easier than a do-it-yourself root canal. |
