1. How old are you? And since when does "over 40" mean
"look like a total frump?"

On edit: I didn't mean to make this about me, btw - I was just a little insulted by the idea that women over 40 should look a certain way.

39. Most women I know look pretty good at 40 and over
it depends on where you live and your health. I noticed that women my age from sunny, hot climated look considerably older because of sun exposure. There's something to be said for cloudy, damp weather!

68. 40 is a different thing these days than it was 30 years ago
I think many women at 40 today can and do look very hot. Why? same reason somebody at 25 may look frumpy--because they take care of themselves, exercise and eat wisely.

20. about those hands
That trick of holding your hands up so the blood flows out of the veins and makes them look younger still works in your 40s. If you look at the photo again, you'll see that's what she is doing. She knows every trick in the book to look younger. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I do exactly the same if I can't avoid being photographed.

42. My hands look older
And I am 27 and generally look younger than my age. It has to do with the fact that I work in the food industry and am washing my hands often with above average strength soaps and sanitizer. With what I do, it is not good for me to use hand lotion after handwashing at work.
I am trying to use lotion more often while I am at home and my hands get a little better in later spring and summer. I want to avoid having permanently premature aged hands though.

I'm under 30. Getting enough sleep really helps. Most people don't get enough sleep. It actually gets kind of irritating, what with people not taking you seriously and stuff. I mean, YES, I'm a real adult, with a mortgage and shit, and I'm pretty responsible, I just happen to have a youthful attitude and look young. Right now I have a little bit of gray, and I'm keeping it; maybe that'll make people knock that stuff off. :7

28. I believe she is forty ....
Black and Asian women have a thicker layer of fat under their skin than white women, and tend to wrinkle less, and at a later age. My wife is forty-five and has no facial lines at all, is often mistaken, particularly by white people, as being much younger than she is.

when people tell me I don't look over 40, I say, this is what over forty looks like....I really wish we weren't so obsessed as a culture with looking younger than we are, because the implication is that it is bad to age, period. And with age comes experience and wisdom. I earned these laugh lines and the silver hairs and I don't mind looking like I have lived life. That's the way it is and I am not ashamed to have them!

50. Go google on Benjamin Franklin's reasons
June 25. 1745

My dear Friend,

I know of no Medicine fit to diminish the violent natural Inclinations you mention; and if I did, I think I should not communicate it to you. Marriage is the proper Remedy. It is the most natural State of Man, and therefore the State in which you are most likely to find solid Happiness. Your Reasons against entring into it at present, appear to me not well-founded. The circumstantial Advantages you have in View by postponing it, are not only uncertain, but they are small in comparison with that of the Thing itself, the being married and settled. It is the Man and Woman united that make the compleat human Being. Separate, she wants his Force of Body and Strength of Reason; he, her Softness, Sensibility and acute Discernment. Together they are more likely to succeed in the World. A single Man has not nearly the Value he would have in that State of Union. He is an incomplete Animal. He resembles the odd Half of a Pair of Scissars. If you get a prudent healthy Wife, your Industry in your Profession, with her good Economy, will be a Fortune sufficient.

But if you will not take this Counsel, and persist in thinking a Commerce with the Sex inevitable, then I repeat my former Advice, that in all your Amours you should prefer old Women to young ones. You call this a Paradox, and demand my Reasons. They are these:

1. Because as they have more Knowledge of the World and their Minds are better stor'd with Observations, their Conversation is more improving and more lastingly agreable.

2. Because when Women cease to be handsome, they study to be good. To maintain their Influence over Men, they supply the Diminution of Beauty by an Augmentation of Utility. They learn to do a 1000 Services small and great, and are the most tender and useful of all Friends when you are sick. Thus they continue amiable. And hence there is hardly such a thing to be found as an old Woman who is not a good Woman.

3. Because there is no hazard of Children, which irregularly produc'd may be attended with much Inconvenience.

4. Because thro' more Experience, they are more prudent and discreet in conducting an Intrigue to prevent Suspicion. The Commerce with them is therefore safer with regard to your Reputation. And with regard to theirs, if the Affair should happen to be known, considerate People might be rather inclin'd to excuse an old Woman who would kindly take care of a young Man, form his Manners by her good Counsels, and prevent his ruining his Health and Fortune among mercenary Prostitutes.

5. Because in every Animal that walks upright, the Deficiency of the Fluids that fill the Muscles appears first in the highest Part: The Face first grows lank and wrinkled; then the Neck; then the Breast and Arms; the lower Parts continuing to the last as plump as ever: So that covering all above with a Basket, and regarding only what is below the Girdle, it is impossible of two Women to know an old from a young one. And as in the dark all Cats are grey, the Pleasure of corporal Enjoyment with an old Woman is at least equal, and frequently superior, every Knack being by Practice capable of Improvement.

6. Because the Sin is less. The debauching a Virgin may be her Ruin, and make her for Life unhappy.

7. Because the Compunction is less. The having made a young Girl miserable may give you frequent bitter Reflections; none of which can attend the making an old Woman happy.

8thly and Lastly They are so grateful!!

Thus much for my Paradox. But still I advise you to marry directly; being sincerely Your affectionate Friend.

RL

But I'm just saying that if the woman in the top photo were walking down the street, she'd be more likely to cause me to lose my train of thought than the second. Once reason is that she looks closer to my age, and IMO, is more attractive also. But that is just my opinion. :HI:

64. 40 is not old anymore.
Women today take better care of themselves and look younger at 40 than they did 50 years ago.

69. I just turned 50, and I don't have wrinkles.
A number of people were shocked when they found out how old I am, particularly people in their early thirties. Good genes for looking younger, on both sides of my family. :-)

...carded all the time. Lifestyles are healthier nowadays. This is not surprising at all...

76. I'm a 40-year-old woman and was carded
about two months ago... by a kid in his early 20's. Made my day. I work at a university, and people who don't know me think I'm a grad student in my ;ate 20's. I not bragging -- I'm thanking my family for damn good genes.

81. Me too-got carded last month by a 19 year old
When I got lost on a campus last year a student showed me the way to the lecture hall and asked me what my major was! I also taught colllege courses a few years ago, and actually had a student quit my class on the first day because he "didn't want some girl his age educating him". :eyes:

Sunscreen, Cellex-C, and good genes. :-)

77. sunscreen probably
many women i see over 40 who look "good for 40" do so because they use sunscreen and don't go out baking themselves in the sun. and i guess just eating well and staying active would help also.

and there is another side to this also, i have seen some girls who are around 25 and younger than 40 and they look much older and usually it's because of the sun.

just using sunscreen and not baking in the sun helps a lot when it comes to having nice skin.

87. I believe she's forty.
Look at her neck and even a bit on her left hand.

She is youthful looking, yes, but she doesn't *not* look forty. I'm nearly at the 39 mark myself, and, though I look "youthful" (if I do say so myself), I also think I look like my age.

89. I couldn't remember your username, but
your picture was one of the ones that came to mind when I was trying to think of 40 year olds (ok, 39) who look a LOT younger. A lot of the people on this board seem to think that I am saying that woman approaching 40 are not attractive for some reason. All I am saying is that if is rare that I see a picture of a woman at 40, and mistake her for being my age (I'm 28). You pics come to mind as being pretty darn close.
