School video allegedly ridicules special-ed child
Canadian Press
Apr. 18, 2005 11:00 AM

WINNIPEG - The parents of an 11-year-old special-needs student say they are angry their son was ridiculed in a school video project for which students won't be disciplined.

The mother says the seven-minute video, which was done as a class project, is designed to look like an advertisement for an energy drink. She said the commercial asks if its viewers are lazy, slow or stupid and then shows her son as someone who could benefit from the drink.

"To me, there is no doubt about it. With 400 kids at the school, they chose my son to video, but the principal said there will be no discipline because she doesn't feel it was made with malicious intention," said the mother.

"I believe that means it is open season on aboriginal special-needs children."

The woman has taken stress leave from her job as an education policy analyst with the Southern Chiefs Organization.

3. This just burns me up.
I currently work with special needs kids. I just picture one of them in this video and my blood boils.

What the hell is wrong with people. Special needs children know when people like them and when people are making fun of them. They can sense when people are nervous and uncomfortable around them. That poor child has enough to deal with in life, they don't need this, too.

4. I have a son....
... who is developmentally disabled.

He just wants to be like everybody else. He tries so hard. God help anybody I see picking on him.

Now that this video is done, there's probably not much anyone can do. Where were the teachers when it was being made? They should have put a stop to it.
