Today we did a good deed... |
|
And I'm really pleased about it.
As many of you know we're on vacation this week. We take day trips. We go from Milwaukee, WI to somewhere for the day and then come home at night. Today we were in some small towns in Northern Wisconsin when we saw a sign that said, "Iron Mountain Michigan, 90 miles". Paul says, "I've never been there before," so we headed out that way.
Got to Iron Mountain and found a small antique store that had some old cookbooks. I got a couple for a friend of mine and saw a display for some from the town and asked about it. Sold out, the lady said. If you go to the bank, though, you might be able to get one there.
Off to the bank we go. As we walk in the door I see a sign on the bulletin board saying that the animal shelter there is in desperate need of kitty food, puppy food, scoopable cat litter, etc.
So, Paul, our friend Kenny, and I go to the store and spend about $50 getting stuff for the animal shelter in a town that we'd never been to before.
When we got there the woman asked for our name and address so they could send a thank you card. When we told her we were from Milwaukee, WI she was just shocked that we would do something like that.
I felt good all day.

We could do a whip-around for them? Help them setup a Paypal account or something?

I think they're trying to get a different building for the shelter. The one they are in is an old schoolhouse and it's in serious disrepair.
I don't know about any Paypal account for them. I know they've got coffee cans set in several local businesses trying to get donations.

8. Sometimes I fantasize.... |
|
...that someday I'll be rich enough to spend the rest of my life looking for small community organizations run by committed, hard-working volunteers working to make their community a better place for everyone, and anonamously donating enough to make a difference. They say money can't buy happiness? I disagree, it's just a matter of how you choose to spend it.

10. While heading for Michigan... |

We were fantasizing about being multi-billionaires and buying up all the land that was for sale (that was to be raped to make new track housing) and making it a nature preserve.
Some fantasies just SHOULD come true.

12. Good stuff, isn't it? |

I'm rediscovering this feeling, as well. Pulled off the road yesterday, having seen an older woman sort of shuffling towards a mailbox, mail in hand. Saw there were quite a few steps on her planned route, so just pulled over and asked her if I could drop the mail in the box for her. I'll bet I saved her half an hour...
No skin off my neck, but made her day. Gotta keep it up. :)

And for Paul and Kenny, too. The woman at the shelter may have been amazed, but she was also grateful. So were the animals in her care.
You reminded me of a time, long ago, when rbnyc wanted a pet so much she had taken to bringing home earthworms and caterpillars. We went to a shelter on the way home from where I worked. It was not a no-kill shelter, but donations could be made in the name of any of the furry critters there to prolong their lives. They were on a corner where an elementary school bus stopped twice a day. Kids came in with what was left of their lunch money to donate to their favorite dog or cat. It was mostly pennies, nickels, and dimes. Any animal receiving a donation would not be euthanized, even if it was just a few cents. We got a little kitten who grew to be a huge cat. I'm glad he had a fan club. (We also dropped a donation for Watson's sister. Never having a cat, we weren't prepared to deal with two.)
The interest you've inspired here makes me think that one could locate this shelter through the Chamber of Commerce or Visitor's Bureau of Iron Mountain. The shelter would really be amazed to receive donations from all over the world because we heard about their plight from three guys from Milwaukee.
You may have done gooder than you know. ;-)
Ma
P.S. I'll admit that I helped foster rbnyc's love of cats. The cats are primarily responsible, though.
