Why do some smokers see the world as their ashtray?
I don't smoke but I am not one of those "all smokers are evil" kind of person....to each his/her own.

BUT..yesterday I had the pleasure of sitting in Pittsburgh's nasty morning traffic on the parkway and I was disgusted by how many people were throwing their cigarettes out the window.
I was behind one fellow for most of the drive in and he threw 3 cigarettes out the window in a 20 minute time frame.

The woman in the car beside him at one point did the same...It is littering!!! and it drives me nuts...

So tell me...why? They put ashtrays in cars, that's where my change normally goes and the legos my kids leave in the car.....why not use them for the cigarette butts???

3. My car actually doesn't have an ashtray
but i put a regular ashtray in there. I hate when smokers throw their cigarettes out the window or on the ground. I've gone as far as to snuff out a cigarette and stick the butt in my pocket 'til i could find a trashcan.

7. I know people who do that too...
so that is why I have to say that the ones who throw them on the ground are just pigs...
I see the same thing in my neighborhood regarding people who dump pop cans and garbage in my yard...I guess they couldn't keep an empty can in the car until they got home to throw it away...

10. my favorite was the gal I was following in traffic in Homestead
she was smoking but every time she exhaled she exhaled out the window..and she kept her cigarette out the window too...

So I was thinking...Clearly she doesn't want the "smell" in her car...yet she is sucking that into her lungs.

6. One of the things I love about California...
I haven't seen a single person throw a cigarette out of a car window here. In Florida, I used to dodge them on the highway every few seconds for fear of one flying up under and into my car. It happens.

Okay, now you're scaring me. I live in a small town and not many people even have balconies. You give me the impression that this is a common occurance in cities. Are people really peeing off balconies on a regular basis?

Maybe I'll stay in my little town.

15. It makes me insane too...
You should see the places where we go camping. It's like these idiots think it's one big ashtray. It's really sad. And it pisses me off that they use them as such. Littering laws need to be enforced for butts too. It's the skankiest thing ever.

17. Same reason some girl at a bar held her cigerette right in my face...
Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 08:56 AM by LynneSin
..because they don't want to smell like cigerettes. I'm not saying this is true of all smokers, but you see alot of people out there especially with young women.

Twice it's happened where I've sat in a bar that allowed smoking (which is rare since DE is smokefree) and I've had a young woman smoking a cigerette and she holds her cigerette in a way that is so far away from her that it's practically in my face. The first woman was nice about it when I moved the ashtray back to in front of her and nicely stating "I know they allow smoking here but would you mind if I put this ashtray in front of you). But another time, the woman had the stupidty of saying "I hold it out here because I don't like the smell of smoke". You don't like the smell of smoke? THEN WHY THE HELL ARE YOU A DUMBASS AND SMOKE IN THE FIRST PLACE. (Well, I wasn't that rude but I held my ground and explained that I too didn't like the smell of smoke which is why I choose not to do it in the first place. She ended up moving).

It's the same thing with cars. Smoking already stinks up the car but nothing makes a car smell worse than an ashtray filled with old cigerette butts. Believe me, I use to sell cars and those ashtrays can get a weirdass funky smell to them. So I think people pollute because they don't want that funky ashtray smell of old cigerettes. Still no excuse. Either don't smoke or make an effort to empty your ashtray everyday (and no, not on the ground beside you).

34. Last week, I had to call the fire dept. to report a brush-fire...
... on the side of the road. It had all the signs of being started by a tossed cigarette.

Littering issue aside, it's just crazy to toss cigarettes out the window, particularly during a dry spell. We'd gone about three weeks without rain at that point... a little common sense would be helpful, even if common courtesy is in short supply.
