What's Your Phobia?
I didn't think I had one, but after last night, I may have a fear of moths. Three huge ones made their way into our place, and the low droning sound and the erratic flying gave me the willies. What about you?

though, my fear is being laughed at.. it's a socail thing. But yeah I do have times where I lay awake at night worrying that someone is tring to break into my kids' room, or that lightning might strike my house or something. Always gets worse when I am depressed.

It doesn't say much for my school, but it's the truth! Unfortunately, our student lounge was infested with some rather huge brownish cockroaches a couple of years ago. My friend was screaming and moaning about one she saw and how awful it was. I promptly went over there and smashed it with my boot. She SCREAMED her bloody head off!

it's ANTS I hate. Several times in my life I've encountered nests of ants (once, fire ants, the Texas predator), and nothing freaks me out worse than having hundreds of teeny tiny things crawling all over me.

I'd rather hear a big crunch than feel things crawling on me. Especially when they bite and leave scars!

Get ready for em, honey. Everybody in Texas has em, and they bleeping hurt!

I don't trust them. Also they control everything about how a community operates and have too much political power locally.

I am even more allergic to building/remodelling contractors. Have had to fight rip-offs so many times am severely allergic to anything having to do with houses. This fear and loathing is at the level of a phobia. (They are often in bed with Realtors).

But maybe these phobias are still too "rational."
OK, If you want irrational phobias, how about claustrophobia. I'd be one of those people who'd have to have therapy to endure a full-body cat scan.

33. Yes - quite well. Here's the recurring nightmare
I'm driving across a bridge. I've got all three of my kids in the car (ages 13, 5, and 2). Something happens (varies each time) and we end up going off the bridge and into the water. As the car begins to sink, I start getting the kids out of their car seats. I tell the 5-year-old to hang onto her sister's neck and kick her feet. I tell the oldest to swim as hard as she can for shore. I strap the 2-year-old to my back with a belt (or whatever I can find in the dream) and push the two girls out the car window just as the whole thing goes under.

I hold my breath, get my bearings and then take myself and the 2-year-old out the window and to the surface. I can see the girls heading for shore and I go to follow them. I rush ahead because my son isn't breathing. I get to the shore and start CPR just as my oldest daughter begins to yell. Her sister has slipped off her back and is somewhere under the water. I'm faced with the decision to save my son or my daughter.

That's where I wake up each time.

I caught myself developing a new phobia not long ago. I was briefly stuck between floors in an elevator, and I started getting mildly panicky every time I got into an elevator for about two weeks. It never progressed to the level of a true phobia, though, because I caught it so early.

Even if someone else is at a ledge or overlook, I feel like someone has kicked me in the balls. At movies or even TV shows, I get a real physical reaction to heights. 70. Water
It's the only thing I'm afraid of and it pisses me off. I nearly drowned when I was 8 years old and I've never been able to shake the fear of water. I like being near it and I will swim if no one is anywhere near me. But if someone splashes water, especially in my face, it freaks me right out. I can't even watch movies in which people are struggling in the water - I hyperventilate.

I hate it - makes me feel weak and stupid. :grr:

71. Fire and water.
Sad, huh? When I was 17 I learned to strike a match and use a lighter and started smoking just because I felt so empowered. No kidding. Still can't go in a body of water bigger than a hot tub.

77. Fire-I'm also fascinated by it
I like it in a controlled sense, but am terrified of it in other ways. I was in a house fire as a little kid and have never forgotten it.

94. awaiting a storm right now, and I dread it so much I feel kind of sick
I'm just hoping that it won't reach here.

It's kind of amazing that you can stand living in Florida. Some parts of that state have more cloud-to-ground strikes than any other place in the US!

Of course, a lot of the people who frequent Storm Phobia live in Tornado Alley. Even other phobix are a lot braver than I am, it seems.

80. Medical procedures
I had a systoscope (think colonoscopy, but turn over), every year from when I was 8 until 18. I also had my blood drawn every month, and my veins haven't really recovered.

I can't stand being in hospitals, and I will start shaking uncontrolably when getting an IV - even though I know it doesn't really hurt.

The last time I had a systo - it was about 6 years ago now, a Dr tried to do it as an office procedure. I ran out of his office screaming obscenities. I found a dr who would do it in the hospital under sedation.

You would think that Dr's and Nurses would be sensative to PTSD issues, but they always minimize my feelings.

95. that's not an irrational fear --
you have been conditioned. I agree that drs and nurses need to be much more aware of medical-related PTSD. I almost died once from a misdisgnosis (I saved my own life), and also once went into cardiac distress from an allergic reaction to something I told the Doc not to give me, as I knew I would not tolerate it (so he proceeds to give me an overdose). So now I insist that they LISTEN to whatever I say--if that respect and sensitivity is NOT there, I'll walk right out of the room. So I have overcome my medical phobia somewhat by fighting back, but also by finding and advocating doctors who treat me like a partner in the process. I don't want any other kind.

82. ANY kind of insect, and heights!
I have 3-4 cans of Raid in my house in case one of my 3 cats doesn't kill whatever it is first! A roach got into my house once, and I sprayed it with Raid, and had to cover it with a paper towel so I couldn't see it. Had to have a friend come over to dispose of it! Also found out I can go on rollercoasters fine since you're strapped in & the force forces you in the seat... but put me on a ferris wheel, and I FREAK OUT!!!!
