There has to be at least one other DU who could extoll the virtues of Drunks with Guns...

28. Yo! Over here!
Drunks with Guns, headed by Mike Doskocil, from St. Louis.

They had a few good tunes, but I never heard too much by them...I just remember a great interview they did for Forced Exposure where the interviewer (Suzy Rust) tried to get them to admit tht they forced bong hits on six-year-olds. Funny stuff.

30. They were the prototype to the Melvins and such.
totally sloppy, untalented punk. they played slow because they sucked so bad. their album is a classic.

10. They play "An Honest Mistake" a lot on XM.
It's a catchy song, but there was a while there where you couldn't get away from it.

12. "Bridge Under the Sky" by The Plastic Cloud
There was a recent re-release of the CD ("The Plastic Cloud"), so you don't have to troll ebay for months on end.

The Plastic Cloud was a Canadian psychedelic band. I'd describe them as somewhat like The Byrds, albeit without Eight Miles High, which is in a class by itself.

14. John Kongos - "He's Gonna Step on You Again" (1971)
A jump up and down dancing fool kind of song by a groundbreaking artist.

He pioneered sampling!

But the songs that got by far the most attention were the two hit singles*, based around far heavier, almost jungle-like rhythms. "He's Gonna Step on You Again" used a tape loop of actual African tribal drums, and was eventually cited by The Guinness Book of Records as the first sample ever used on a record. Recognizing a good thing when he found one, Kongos's follow-up single "Tokoloshe Man" was also anchored by tribal stomp beats and almost disembodied, half-shouted vocals.

*hits in the UK, but not the US.

16. "Must be something in the rain--" Tish Hinojosa
Off her Culture Swing CD.

SOMETHING IN THE RAIN
By Tish Hinojosa

Mom and dad have worked the fields, I don't know how many years
I'm just a boy but I know how, and go to school when work is slow
We have seen our country's road, Bakersfield from Illinois
And when troubles come our way, oh yeah, I've seen my daddy pray.
There's something wrong with little sister, I hear her cryin' by my side
Mama's shaking as she holds her; we try to hold her through the night
And mom says close you eyes mijito, dream of someplace far from here
Like the pictures in your schoolbooks, someday you can take us there
There must be something in the rain
I'm not sure what that means
Abuelita talks of sins of man, of dust that's in our hands
There must be something in the rain
well what else could cause this pain
Those airplanes cure the plants so things can grow
Oh no, it must be something in the rain
Little sister's gone away. Mama's workin' long again
And me I think I understand about our life about our land
Well, talkers talk and dreamers dream; I will find a place between
I'm afraid but I believe that we can change these hurting fields
Cause there's something in the rain but there's more here in our hands
'Buelita's right about the sins of man who's profits rape the land
And the rains are pouring down from the growers to the towns
And until we break the killing chains
There's something in the rain&

rest of the lyrics anywhere. So if any of you out there have heard it or know where I can find it (lyrics or recording), please let me know. (calyso)

Day after day
More people come to LA
Shh! Don't you tell nobody
Da whole place shakin' away
Where can we go
When there's no San Francisco?
Ooo ooo What can you do
With a bushel of wet gold?

Do you know the swim?
Ya betta learn quick kid!
Those who don't know the swim
Betta sing the hymn.

31. "Tell Me Heaven Is Here" by the Buoys
Yeah, the same Buoys who did the best song about cannibalism ever, "Timothy." But this one is an excellent sad love song. Starts off pretty, slow, sad with some really cool guitar work; and by the end explodes at a fast tempo with a great guitar solo. Really cool song, IMHO. I'm not sure if it's available in any format but vinyl, though... Most likely it's not as I doubt their old album was ever released on CD and they didn't have enough hits to have a greatest hits compilation CD.

Currently, one of the best songs (and CD by the same name) that I've heard in a long time. If you like metal at all, I'd recommend you pick it up. By metal, I'm referring mostly to new thrash metal, like Darkest Hour and Unearth.
