Q from an old outta the loop phart: WTF does "m'kay" mean?
I see this written from place to place and I have no idea what it
signifies...is it some kind of weird mutation of "okay"? (Gawd, I feel like an idiot having to ask..)

1. Kind of a cross between "okay" and "mmm HMM"
Immortalized by the Mr. Mackey character on South Park.

3. You nailed it
Basically when you're feeling lazy when saying "okay" and you kinda mumble the beginning, it comes out sounding like "m'kay"

7. Ah. I feel a modicum of vindication...but the quality of diction
that seems to be in vogue is a bit worrisome. :eyes: :D

9. Indeed it is.
You're from Oklahoma though. You should be witnessing the demise of proper diction on a daily basis.

11. Oh, okay. I never know what the smiley deals say. My eyes avoid them.
I really need to look at that smiley thing more. And at that mouth hole on people that makes endless noises and goes into funny shapes. But I have little talent for looking at that, let alone understanding it. But maybe the computer smiley ones I should try.

Thank you for drawing a helpful link between verbal and on-line expression.

14. I first made fun of it when I taught class, and then I caught myself doing
it unthinkingly.

(I think I have broken myself of the habit. You people have probably got me started again. Thanks.)
