I have given up pot. For a while, anyway.
My husband and I decided that if we are going to be adoptive parents we are going to have to give up the ganja. So what should I do with my new weed-free lifestyle? What have I been missing, besides excercise?

7. My condolences.
I never understood how smoking weed makes you a bad parent but whatever works for you.

8. I don't think it would make me a bad parent, I'm just concerned
that they might drug test us when we go in for our physical. I've been waiting to be a mom for so many years, I don't want to blow it.

17. Being baked out of your mind...
would impede your ability to deal with a screaming 8 month old who was freaking out possibly because of some medical condition. (And of course being shitfaced drunk would make one even less capable of dealing with such crises.)

If a parent has a good support nearby to help with such emergencies, then there's probably not much wrong with some bongtime after the kid has gone to bed, but if the parent is out there on their own, then sobriety is probably the prudent choice.

10. Yeah, I kind of gave it up for a bit myself
My hubby recently got laid off so he's stopped because of possible drug testing for jobs. I've stopped in solidarity with him.

I hope he gets a job soon - I'm popping way too many pills now. :silly:

Seriously, good luck on the adopting. Adoptive parents rock! I have a seven year old granddaughter who was given up for adoption - her mom was very young and we wanted that baby to have everything she deserved. Her adoptive parents are wonderful and we keep in touch often and I get lots of pictures and letters. Though I miss her and always will, it's one of the few decisions I made that I know for sure was the right one.

12. I remember when I gave up smoking pot.
I did a lot more reading. My theory is that reading books takes your mind off your present state somewhat like pot does.

14. I had to give it up as well.....
when I started my career as an art therapist 6 months ago.....I felt like a hypocrite telling some of my clients that they had to stop smoking if they wanted their kids back or working with teenages who are substance abusers, while smoking the ganja myself. It's been hard, but I figure if I'm gonna talk the talk....

I work with tons of kids who are looking for adoptive or foster parents and they need strong, loving, open-minded people to give them a good foundation. Good luck with the adoption process! I think you'll find that giving up the ganja will be worth it!

15. I gave it up for my kid.
Gave it up when I was pregnant. I took up knitting and crocheting. You can make a nice afghan for the child if you like.

16. Study links marijuana buzz to 'runner's high'
ATLANTA, Georgia (Reuters) --The same family of chemicals that produces a buzz in marijuana smokers may be responsible for "runner's high," the euphoric feeling that some people get when they exercise, U.S. researchers say.

High levels of anandamide were found in young men who ran or cycled at a moderate rate for about an hour, according to a study made public this week by the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of California, Irvine.

Anandamide is a cannabinoid, or lipid molecule, that is naturally produced in the body. It is known to produce sensations that are similar to those of THC, the psychoactive property in marijuana.

The study's findings, which were recently published in the journal NeuroReport, fly in the face of those who believe that the release of brain chemicals called endorphins cause the peculiar high that some runners and cyclists claim to feel.<snip>

18. It's not the same.
I used to smoke a lot of pot, and now I run a lot. The sensation one gets from running is great, but it doesn't make you wanna listen to reggae and eat Cheetos. I'd still encourage anyone to start running, though. It's a blast. It's like going for a nice leisurely walk, only you get to take in more scenery because you're travelling a longer distance in the same period of time.

19. We Obviously Have Different Tastes in Music, Munchies, & Exercise
I used to smoke a lot of pot, and now I run a lot. The sensation one gets from running is great, but it doesn't make you wanna listen to reggae and eat Cheetos.

Nothing makes me want to listen to reggae and eat cheetos.
Give me some Grateful Dead or some Goa trance, and some GOOD munchies!

Actually, I think both substances cause a desire for more sensory input.
If you are just sitting around listening to reggae, one may seek out your
sensory input from the kitchen. The bedroom may be another possibility.
If I am exercising, I am getting plenty of sensory input already.

If not, the kind of music I prefer tends to make me want to get up
and dance. Dancing is very good exercise, and the interaction
of movement and rhythm is psychoactive in its own right.

Dancing can get me through times of no dope
better than dope can get me through times of no dancing.
(with apologies to the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers)

I'd still encourage anyone to start running, though. It's a blast. It's like going for a nice leisurely walk, only you get to take in more scenery because you're travelling a longer distance in the same period of time.

Riding a bike does even better in this respect, and isn't so hard on
the shins. You also get to cool off on the downhill sections.

21. Damn. And all this time I've been wishing my parents had toked
They would have been much calmer people.

But I understand your concerns. It's only an herb, but you'd think it was some chemical conceived in hell the way some people act.

Good luck and hope your wish for a little one comes true very soon...
