Ack! Hubby has a slipped disc.
Suggestions to help him feel better until his chiropractor appointment tomorrow?

1. Ice first, then heat
Anti-inflammatories to reduce the swelling that builds up around it.

You don't say where it is but sometimes it's hard to find a comfortable position for sleeping. Sometimes a pillow under the area helps - sometimes it makes it worse.

Lots of love and sympathy. Poor guy, I know what that's like.

3. Lower back just above the butt.
I already have him on anti-inflammatory since this morning when it went out on him.

6. Well, my back was just a muscle spasm of extreme magnitude
and I've been told by my doc to ice the hell out of it and take anti-inflammatories (i.e. Advil).

I suggest the ice. It's helping me quite a bit.

8. That's my trouble spot too
I don't have a slipped disc there - I have fairly severe osteo-arthritis. God, it can be painful! I feel for your hubby. Oddly, I sometimes find gentle walking helps it - it tends to lengthen the spine a bit (sitting just compresses it) and loosens the muscles.

And I swear by chiropractors - I don't care what anybody says. Medical doctors just seem to want to load you up with narcotics whereas chiros actually help alleviate the pain.

for chiropractors especially if it really is a bulging or a ruptured disc.

7. couple of tips ...
to take strain off the low back, have him lie on his back with his heels near his butt so his knees are bent or put a pillow or two under his knees ...

for sleeping, have him keep a pillow between his knees ...

other basics include anti-inflammatory (Advil, Aleve) and probably ice ... i might stay away from heat until you get a more thorough diagnosis ...

finally, there are all sorts of good books on dealing with back pain ... when it's appropriate, an array of stretching and strengthening exercises could provide some relief and might provide some protection from further injury ...

10. Nix the chiro; mine made my disc slip...
try an orthopedist or neurologist and get to the problem. Chirocrackery/chiroquackery is not the answer.
