It's still light out
at 21:15... I can't sleep when it's light out. And, it will only get worse over the next month. Sunset, soon, will be at 22:30. Sunrise at 05:00.

1. Room darkening drapes or shades
It's what keeps me sane. Light drives me crazy when I'm tired, so our bedroom is known as The Bat Cave.

But it works. Beautifully.

I feel for you. Where are you?

4. I'm in Calgary
but it's not as bad as those further north than I. You know, land of the midnight sun. I do have dark shades on my windows, but light has a tendency to creep in... damn light. And then, there's the songbirds. Fuck the songbirds. Yes, it's light. STFU.

2. I understand...
But I love it; having the sunset at 10pm is pretty cool, but then I don't have to get up in the morning..

5. You must be north of me
I don't think our days are that long. I could (and probably am) wrong.

7. Saskatoon is not that much further north.
I love these long days of summer. This site will calculate the hours of sunlight.

9. I had no idea
If I read this right, on June 21, sunrise is at 4:22 and sunset is at 20:55. So that makes it just under 18 hours. Crap! That's one long day! Thanks for the link and the info. It didn't make me feel any better. But, that's okay.

The weirdest thing I experienced was being in South America (near the equator). I had this long day/short day thing in my head, but it doesn't happen there. Sunrise = 0700. Sunset = 19:00. No matter the season. Weird for us in the Great White North.

6. See this webpage
I am a nightshifter, so I have to sleep during the day. I've never, until this sleep mask, been able to comfortably wear a sleep mask. I found this one at an airport (and paid far more than you will). It is amazing and I've gotten to the point where it feels abnormal for me to not wear the mask when I'm sleeping and most important of all, I no longer have to put aluminum foil on my windows to try to get a dark enough sleep environment.

8. Thank you for that link
I don't think it's so much the light, as I feel energized from the light. If that makes any sense. We go so long with such short days, that when they become longer, I don't WANT to sleep as much. Even though I know I need my 8 hours. Have used sleep masks in the past. Love them! Also, regardless of the weather, I have to have my window open, for the fresh air. And the wind sure does blow, way up here. So the blinds rattle quite a bit.

10. So, since you know that you need the sleep
and you've just perfectly described the melatonin system disruption that is common in areas where it stays light too late and gets light too early, I would add on a recommendation for melatonin 1-3 mg 15 minutes before you plan to be tucked into bed. Start with 1mg because some people are very sensitive and can end up with a bad headache in the morning from too much melatonin supplementation.

12. Nah
it's easier to buy a six-pack of super-cans. I kid. I kid. Thanks for that. I've thought about going to my MD for a script, but I never seem to have the time. I should plan better. Again, thanks for the advice. I definitely will look into it. BTW, is there a "natural" solution i.e. something you can pick up at a health food store?

13. melatonin
is not prescription and can be picked up in a health food store.

At least that's how it is in the United States of Fascism. Should be the same up in Canada.
