Need ideas: where can I hide my gadgets from thieves? |
|
My studio apartment was robbed about a year ago. They only took the small stuff and left the large stuff. So I got a new digital camcorder yesterday and I'm trying to figure out a good place to hide it from thieves next time they stop by. Problem is, I don't have a lot of space to work with. In a moldy old chinese takeout box in the back of the fridge would be great, but not too good for electronics, sadly. My second choice is in a tupperware container in one of my kitchen cabinets (for a studio I have a huge kitchen with lots of cabinets). I'm also thinking about inside the grand piano. How about a small slit in the side of my mattress and sticking it there? Would that be, like, the first place they'd look. There is a large cellar I have access to, I'm thinking that would be good but it floods occasionally and gets damp.
Any creative ideas? Some place where a thief would NEVER think of looking?

If you don't mind carrying it around in one, it would be functional as well. Some of those things are nicely padded and have plenty of pockets to store things in!

7. idea just hit me: get a big cat box. |
|
Borrow some used litter from a neighborly cat.
Put gadgets in tupperware container that will fit in litter box and leave enough room to cover with smelly stinky litter. Seal well with packing tape.
Relax in the knowledge that your valuables are now safe from harm.

FizzFuzz! Under the cat litter is a BRILLIANT idea. However I have a cat, I have a litter box, cat uses litterbox quite regularly. I'm afraid of pee leaking down. Even if tupperware protects said camera, I don't like the idea of fishing out a pee-soaked container when I need the camera. Still, a brilliant idea and I may end up holding my nose and doing just that. My guess is a thief would never EVER dig around in a litter box.
Runner up: Finder. A false bottom in the garbage container. Nice idea too. Smelly garbage liquid leaking down is a problem, but not as distasteful as cat pee, and tupperware protects all. I think a thief just might peek inside, but probably not.
Honorable mention 1: A diaper bag. Pee Yoo. Maybe I could decorate it with a variety of brown smears and little baby turdlets. That could work.
Honorable mention 2: A safe bolted to floor. Landlady may not like something bolted to her floor. And thieves will KNOW something juicy is in there. How far will they be willing to go to get it. It scares me.

11. Inside air return vents / ducts. Unscrew grill, place inside. |
|
Inside pockets of winter coats in closet. You say you have lots of cabinets, stick stuff into boxes for something else (like toaster, etc) and then place on high shelf inside cabinets.
Good luck.
