No faves to recommend specifically, but I'd keep browsing their stuff, if you like what you hear so far :)

6. I think they're fantastic |

I am/was a huge Blur fan so naturally I was interested in Damon's side project. I thoroughly enjoyed their first album but figured it would be a one-off.
The new album is a lot different than the first one -- but I think I like it even more. It's a little bit smoother, not nearly as reggae influenced as the first album.
I don't know how the whole iTunes thing works, but I picked up the new one on sale for $9.99 somewhere. It's certainly worth that, IMHO.
Not sure that I could pick a favorite song. There's a lot of continuity working through their albums.
On edit: Fave cuts off the first album are "Sound Check (Gravity)" and "Tomorrow Comes Today".

9. i dont know how they started (as you clearly do) |
|
would you mind giving me a synopsis of who they are
i am enjoying it. the whole album is 15 songs and on itunes i think it said 11.99 or you can buy individual songs for .99
itunes has a couple free songs each week and i usually download one of them. no catches to the offer so its been a nice find

the whole thing is the brainchild of Damon Albarn, singer and frontman from British band Blur.

The band Blur started circa 1990 in Britain and quickly became synonomous with the style of music known as Britpop. Their chief rival was Oasis.
Eventually (1996/7/8 or so), the Britpop movement began to fall out of popularity as other forms of music began to rise in popularity. Most of the Britpop bands broke up or began releasing albums that no one bought. The main exception was Blur. They began searching for ways to reinvent their sound and to push it into other musical genres (African, electronic, reggae, etc.).
Part of this fallout included several of the members doing solo albums and projects. Damon Albarn (lead singer/piano/some guitar of Blur) decided to team up with his friend Jamie Hewlett (creator of several comics -- Tank Girl being the most famous) and the DJ Dan the Automator to create a "fake" band that would simultaneously examine the idea of musical "celebrity" and also allow the participants to work outside of their usual formats. Guest musicians included Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz of Talking Heads, a couple members of Cibo Matto, some rappers, etc.
The album was originally intended to be a "one-off", but it ended up selling quite well, garnering some critical acclaim and sent the "fake" band on a real tour of the US. (The members played behind a screen while animated Flash movies of the band's alter egos played on the screen. I saw one of the shows. Really cool.)
Albarn got back together with Blur and cut another album after the first Gorillaz, and the future of Gorillaz remained uncertain. However, Albarn reteamed with Jamie Hewlett and decided to do another Gorillaz album. This time they retained a new producer -- Danger Mouse of The Grey Album fame -- and a whole new roster of guests including De La Soul, MF Doom and Dennis Hopper.
And that's the story up through the release of Demon Days about a week ago. Hopefully, they'll tour the US again.
(Sorry for the length!)

18. They just seem WAY too gimmicky. |

If they have to use videos like that then I wonder what else is gimmicky about them. The music is good but I have reservations about it.
