EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- A nanny who left a baby girl at home while she went Christmas shopping in the family's Mercedes has been sentenced in a New York suburb.
The 27-year-old, who pleaded guilty in February to endangering a child, had been promised a sentence of three years probation. But the Eastchester town judge added on 75 hours of community service because he felt the woman didn't understand the seriousness of the crime.
The arrest came last December, after the mother of the 1-year-old girl came home unexpectedly. She found her daughter in her crib -- alone, but unharmed.
Local police said the nanny told them the "baby was a good sleeper" and that she was apparently "gambling nothing would go wrong."
In addition to the community service and probation, the nanny agreed to an order keeping her away from the family.
