and, to the best of my jnowledge, I have no Italian ancestry. It just sounds magical and sexy and romantic.

19. Grew up in a three generation household with Russian immigrant g'parents
If they didn't want me to know what they were talking about - they spoke Yiddish.

And if they REALLY didn't want me to know what they were talking about - they spoke Russian.

So, I picked up a lot of Russian and Yiddish just to find out what they didn't want me to find out. (Like almost half the kids in the neighborhood. The other half of the kids learned Italian to find out what they weren't supposed to find out).

And by the time we were pre-teens we had our own pidgin English-Italian-Yiddish (it was the only way you could play ball).

37. I had a college boyfriend who was completely fluent in Russian.
Could speak it, read it, write it, had taken it for six years.

My God. I still get chills thinking about it.

He could have been saying "I think I'll have a corned beef sandwich," I wouldn't have given a shit, just as long as he kept speaking Russian.

38. I love it, too! I love, in fact, all the serious languages
Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 11:53 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Like Russian, Hebrew, German, Klingon - the ones that are kind of harsh sounding, dense with meaning, and, though they might sound like rending metal working machines, are the most beautiful of languages. And by "serious" I mean only that they just sound serious, all that hacking and throat-clearing and glottal gymnastics to get the sounds out.

Next up would be Hawaiian, or perhaps Tahitian or Maori. But I love the patterns that happen because of Hawaiian's limited sounds.

Spanish I couldn't give a flying fuck for. If it's real Spanish, from Spain, it's quite nice - but the psuedo-spanish of mexico and the colonies sounds awful to my ears. I simply can't stand it, and never have, not since I was a small child and heard it on Sesame Street.

If I could wipe one language from the earth, it would be the non-Spanish that most people think of when they think "Spanish".

Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 11:58 PM by Bouncy Ball
And I can read it. God, Octavio Paz. Ever read any of his stuff? Wow.

But um, this information can NEVER reach Mr. Bouncy's half-German ears, but I think of German as similar to, but also inferior to Russian.

And you described Russian perfectly. Harsh sounding, dense with meaning, but it's musical at times. Ok I have to stop thinking about this now! LOL!!!!

On edit, I took six years of Spanish, including in college. I had a professor from Madrid. Blond hair, blue eyes, and the most beautiful voice. Horrible horrible crush. I didn't make a good grade, because I spent too much time imagining him whisking me off to Madrid.
