Poll question: Greatest LONG Neil Young Song. Not Heart of Gold. L-O-N-G SONG.
Defined as longer than five minutes. Unfortunately, Rockin' In The Free World is four minutes, 41 seconds...so it didn't make the list. The live version, on Weld, is eight and a half minutes long...so if you want, include it as your Other choice.

And, with only 9 choices (and a tenth for Other), I could only go from the first album through Ragged Glory.

7. Ditto - but Cowgirl in the Sand is a close second
Change Your Mind, though is just so both meandering and cohesive, and every minute that goes by I'm just amazed and gratified that the song is still going.

Looooove it!

Cowgirl has a lot of the same feeling to it, but a little less mood and atmosphere.

I know exactly what you mean. There is only one other really long song that I feel quite that way about, "River" by The Red House Painters. I can't go more than two days without listening to that song.

2. Shouldn't "Keep on Rockin' (in the Free World)" be there?
Edited on Thu Jun-02-05 12:19 PM by MnFats
perhaps i am ignorant of something....

anyway, when Neil played it with Bruce Springsteen, The E-Street Band, Michael Stipe and a bunch of others at the Vote For Change concert last September in St. Paul, it was a whole lot longer than 10 minutes and it was simply astounding....they followed it with "All Along the Watchtower," which by that time was stupefying....and great.

5. The version to see was Neil with Pearl Jam on the MTV awards...
http://www.thrasherswheat.org/fot/ritfw.htm

Neil joined Pearl Jam onstage at the MTV Music Awards on September 2, 1993 to play an incendiary version of "Rocking in The Free World". After the broadcast, MTV commentator Kurt Loder observed that the interplay between Young and Pearl Jam was probably one of the most memorable live MTV performances ever.

Some of the other bands that have covered "Rockin'" include:

Van Halen
Patti Smith
Vines
Slobberbone
David Byrne
Phil Lesh & Friends
Indigo Girls
Richard Thompson
