6. AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Unfortunately, I have three kitties in my house, and a stray had five kittens that now call my porch home. They won't let us pick them up, but when they do, they're going somewhere for adoption!

Take him/her to the SPCA, not far from you at all!

If not, the Houston Humane Society has taken many kittens from me. Petsmart adopts from them and then puts them up for adoption in the store. I actually saw one of my former residents in Petsmart!

54. Yes
Both the black and the red are carried on the X chromosone. Therefore a male, with an XY, can't have both red and black. There are some weirdoes out there, though, with an XXY gene, but "most" of them are sterile. I say "most" because lately there have been a couple of them who have been able to reproduce. It's highly unusual, however, and might just be a fluke.

The gene for white is not a sex trait--it's a random gene that is not categorized in the same way. That's why even in cloning, a cloned cat probably won't look like the original, because the white gene doesn't work predictably.

I adopted from the Houston SPCA years ago, when they were still on Studemont. My little girl was lucky to get taken home and live to 18. But it's kitten season, and there are gonna be a LOT of kittens there. See if there is a rescue org that can take her/him.

14. No No No! Don't take that cutie to the SPCA!!!
Most SPCAs do their best, but so many don't get adopted, and, well, you know the rest.

If the person in current custody of the kitten can't find someone to take it in, then a rescue org would really be a better bet.

sooooo cute.... we have four kitties that we rescued at less than one week of age... they all lived... their 5th birthday is in September... and this is why (a) I am totally in LOVE with the little guy in the photo, and (b) I can't have any more.

how can you want to get rid of him? They aren't much trouble. I think you are really looking for someone to talk you into keeping the little kitten. I wasn't much of a pet lover myself, until my kitty came knocking on my door (literally - she figured out how to open my storm door and waited in between the doors for me to leave for work and come home. I had to keep her. She has been such a joy!!!!

89. What to feed kitty
If you can, take him to a vet, or get formula from a pet store: best to do both. Immediately, you can give him condensed milk. He may take it through a thoroughly washed eye- dropper, if need be. I can't be sure of his age through the picture, but it looks like he is pretty young. I can not be sure. If you try to feed a kitten regular food, it really has to be mashed up and fed a little at a time. If you feed them formula or cream, hold them in a little towel or something that will keep them from trying to get away without hurting them. We had a stray give birth in our place once and had to take care of them. We are no experts, so take it with a grain of salt. This is just from my experience.

and another vote for NOT taking to SPCA, pound or animal control.

Petsmart and or Petco both probably know who the local rescue groups are in your area. Call them. Maybe you can find a foster home now that you have the mom and the other babies.

Also the Yahoo! group idea is a good one.

That is a really pretty little cat, however I would not call her a true calico. such a sweet little face.

If I had to bet, I'd bet this one is a little Tom. He was snuggling to the cage and I grabbed him by a leg to stay clear of the Mom. He came up with claws bared and ready to fight. I sat him in my lap and scritched him for a while, as I did with the others. I'll go down in a bit and see if a fourth has come out, then try to get them settled in with her.

that room. I repaired it, but had not been in the other room since. It must have been broken then, too. I saw her run another cat away outside this evening, then she leaped in the window. I tried to seal it but she escaped, then I found the first little guy.
She actually meowed at me when I went down there last. I'm trying to figure whether I'm going to get bit trying to get her and the babies in a cage together for the night.

In the mean time, a heating pad may quiet her down.

If you need help making calls, I can do that. :)

I won't be giving them to anyone who won't swear to neuter them. Let me get my bearings tomorrow, and I'll try to calm her down, too. She's a pretty cat, I hope she's not too wild.

what a sweetie! I see you have been adopted, at least for the time being. :-)

on edit: I am far away, but am fostering a whole family right now too, pm me if you need some specific advice. A rescue group may be able to get flea treatments going while you look for homes for them, if they are booked with fosters and can't take them. A big box with towels inside is good for kittens, and mom will stay close if you just want to shut them in the room you found them in. That's what I am doing in my basement until they are weaned (mom gets fixed then) and them kittens get more time and then they get fixed. If you have mom, you won't have to do much besides feed, water, and litter the mom. She will do the rest.

looks like they are at least five or six weeks old... should wean around 8. good luck my friend, perhaps you need them more than they need you? animals are very theraputic, esp. babies. Even if you only have them for a little while, it's quite a lift to be a hero to them. I know from experience. big hugs to you.

88. it would not hurt her. She would probably like it.
I recommend some form of kitten chow for her, it is extra nutritious and she needs it with those hungry babies. Mama cats can get pretty emaciated looking when they are nursing a litter. I fed my Mom cat Hill's kitten food, and kept the babies on that for about 6 months. They grew into some big ol'cats too.

and 'good on you' for taking them in ..but beware, they have a way of snuggling into your heart if you don't watch out.

100. tuna is the cat's #1 favorite treat. Myhusband used to buy those
little extra cheap pop top cans of tuna for our elderly cat as an occasional treat, since she had lost so many teeth and could not chew as well anymore.

They also like plain yogurt, scrambled eggs

The occasional weird cat will crave things like asparagus, green beans

I had once once that stole tomatoes from my garden.

But the tuna will be a nice treat for her. Plenty of water, plenty of food, cozy box for the babes, she will be content, feel safe and take care of the little ones.

If you get something for the kitty litter, be sure it is fairly shallow as she will teach the babies to use it when the time comes. If they are only getting mama milk, she will clean them up

I may continue with the tuna, then, with the addition of scrambled eggs and yogurt. This should be interesting...
Thanks again,

102. MOST IMPORTANT: get her some Kitten Chow!!!!!!
If you manage to get her and the kits into a foster situation, the food can just go with them, but she needs that allround nutrition while she is feeding those babies.

And DAMN they are cute!!!!!!!!!

103. Most little critters are...
I'll get some Kitten Chow this afternoon. I just put a larger container of water in, and the little spotted one came over and lapped at it. One of the grays tried some, too. Neither of them were interested in the tuna in the least. Mama Cat hasn't made any fast or threatening moves since the first night I caught them.

I'm sorry,I didn't realize there was a mama cat around. Ours disappeared, and I assumed that's why you asked what to feed the kitty. Mama should do okay on her own as long as they are feeding.

These kitties will have a comfortable home and I'll have less aggravation in my yard. Oh, I need to ask about good flea sprays, wipes, or powders for these cats. They're infesting my house.

98. Just about any topical thing you can buy off the shelf should take
care of them while they're with you. Wipes or powders would be best. Don't get them flea collars; they're too young. Aerosol cans scare most cats.

As for your carpets, if you have no other pets, get some of the carpet stuff specifically for killing fleas. I can't think of any of the names but it's relatively easy to find online or at your local pet store.

Their new owners should get Revolution.

104. FLEA TIP from a cat doctor: after the babies are gone, get some
NO Pest Strips, normally used to hang from the ceiling for flies, skeeters, etc.

Open up the vent holes as wide as they will go, and put them under your sofa, chairs, bed, etc. (out of sight, if you don't mind looking at them it doesn't matter)

They are made of very high concentration of the same stuff as flea collars, and putting them down on the ground will get them in flea territory. It does work. They last about 90 days or so at full strength. The deal here is they get the rehatch.

So you can bomb your house with a flea bomb (recommend you find someone to spend the night with or just go to the movies all day), then put the no pest deals down a few days later. The bomb will kill the live fleas, and the immediate hatchlings, and the strips will get the rest.

I moved into a house that must have been flea central for all of Davidson County Tennessee, and the second my cats hit that place, they were totally infested. These were cats who had never seen a flea ever in their lives. Once we learned about the nopest strips, life was much much more pleasant
