Flat screen LCD for gamers? |
|
My 17' CRT finally died so I am in the market for a new monitor. I play games so I need something that doesn't slow me down. My understanding is that LCD, when it first came out, wasn't very good for gaming. I think that has changed. Anyone know?

1. It has indeed changed. Many very good LCD's have draw rates |

like 12ms or faster. 25ms is good for video and barely acceptable for gaming. 12 is awesome :). I haven't shopped around for a while, but if I recall Samsung was making some really nice ones last time I checked, and at VERY good prices. Check newegg.com

The Viewsonic VP171b/s is supposed to be great for gaming (though that's kind of old now). Check out a site like www.tomshardware.com they should have lots of reviews.

5. I heard somebody complaining |
|
the screen doesn't refresh fast enough for fast-moving graphics or animation.

6. We haven't had any problems with ours' |

Of course, we don't play FPS' so that may be why. We have a widescreen LCD monitor that's also our console monitor and 2nd tv (hardly used in thta function, but it's there,) we *love* it.

There are fast LCDs for gaming. They don't have the same picture quality as the slower models, though.
So, unless you want to spend some real money, it is either speed for games or colors and stability for work.
Edit: Don't take a fast screen bigger than 17", unless it is from a real quality brand, like Eizo. There is no such thing as a 10ms LCD - there is no valid standard for measuring the response time.
In theory, a respone time (t_rise+ t_fall) of less than 16 ms is fast enough for games (based on a 60Hz refresh rate). But even screens advertized with "8ms" can have real response times in the 60ms ballpark, without the manufacturer breaching the standard. So read reviews and try out the screen before buying.

Newer models with very low response times will work excellently. If you can find something < 10ms, that would be ideal. Check out Dell's new 20" widescreen model--very nice.
