Rush guitarist, family sue Ritz, 3 Collier deputies
By CHRIS W. COLBY, cwcolby@naplesnews.com, and JOHN HENDERSON, jfhenderson@naplesnews.com
June 2, 2005

A founder of the band Rush, his son and daughter-in-law filed a lawsuit Thursday against the Ritz-Carlton, its security director and three sheriff’s deputies stemming from a New Year’s Eve 2003 altercation at the Naples hotel.

Alex, Justin and Michelle Zivojinovich allege the defendants violated their civil rights, battered and falsely imprisoned them before their arrests on criminal charges that were either later dropped or reduced in court.

Alex Zivojinovich suffered a broken nose during a scrape with the deputies, one of whom he was accused of pushing down a stairwell.

Justin Zivojinovich was roughly subdued and hit with a high-voltage Taser gun repeatedly before his arrest. His father also suffered several Taser hits. <snip>

1. They should have tasered that ridiculous "vocalist."

4. He does
But no other members of Rush were around. This is a family thing with Alex's family in Florida.

3. What?
Geddy Lee? Rush is awesome! All three are considered some of the best with their respective instruments.

As far as the suit goes, Alex was to appear in court soon. I think it might have already happened and the case settled so now starts the civil lawsuits. I really don't know much of what when on, but Alex became upset when he saw how the officers were treating his son and his son's wife.

>>>All three are considered some of the best with their respective instruments.

By who? People who've never heard good music?

I'm sorry, I've been a fan of progressive rock since 1970, I could never understand for a second why anyone thought anyone in Rush was anything beyond the mediocre.

And that owl-screech voice and those absurd pseudo-intellectual lyrics? Yowee what a mess!!!!

I've heard of Rush being called "thinking man's music". It's more like "men who think they can think music", IMHO

7. Neil Pert?
Not a Rush fan.

But I would say that he is a pretty good drummer.

9. "pretty good"...
... yeah I'll give you that. But not excellent, not even in the top 10.

11. Matter of opinion
By Tor and the Snow Dog...2112...The whole friggin' Hemispheres album, etc... They are much less prog nowadays but still very technical musicians. Neil Peart is an incredible drummer!

15. By me, and I'm an internationally famous music expert.
Well, maybe not. But I think they're excellent musicians. I like them, but if you don't that okay too. :)

16. I ...
.... really, really, REALLY, REALLY don't like them, but I do accept the notion that musical appreciation is pretty much subjective :) So, whatever blows your skirt up, or pants or whatever :)

18. Hate to break it to you...
but you don't make 18 studio albums, 5 live albums, and tour for 30 years unless people appreciate your music. Although you may not like it, they are loved around the world, as evidenced by the crowd of over 60,000 they performed to in Rio. There is no arguing about the fact that Geddy Lee and Neil Peart are among the best in the world with their instruments.

25. If you think Rush is bad, try listening to my
personal nemesis, Yes. They're even worse.

The singer for Yes always sounded to me like he had a strangulated hernia.

14. Rush are the best!!
Geddy, Alex and Neil not only rock but are down-to-earth, normal family guys who, up to that night at the Ritz, had never been in any kind of trouble. Pretty good for a group that's been going strong for 30 years. They also have raised millions for charity and in 1997 were also bestowed the "Order of Canada", Canada's highest honour. Neil Peart is an awesome lyricist also.

FREE WILL

There are those who think that life is nothing left to chance
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance.

A planet of playthings,
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive.
"The stars aren't aligned
Or the gods are malign"
Blame is better to give than receive.

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose free will.

There are those who think that they were dealt a losing hand,
The cards were stacked against them
They weren't born in lotus land.

All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate.

Kicked in the face,
You can pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate.

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose free will.

Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete.
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet.

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose free will.

6. The Keystone Cops strike again. These guys are priceless.
This is the same Collier County Sheriff's Department that dressed cops in blackface in the 1990's because "that's what drug dealers look like". This is the same department that caught the "terrorists" who were just medical students who looked too swarthy for the likes of a Denny's waitress in Georgia.

I used to live there. Those cops are nuts.

26. The best thing was their dog.
They had this toothy, nasty looking dog with a huge head that used to patrol Marco Island's beach during spring break, Policia Federal de Mexico style. Mean looking, but a bit too accustomed to making friends with those bearing food. We used to drive the cops nuts by placing pieces of pepperoni here and there when the thing came over, and the dog, draging the cop, would end up running through the dunes.

21. Any band that covers Samuel Taylor Coleridge is all right by me

Seen them many times in 70's and early 80's. Don't like them as much now. Not screechy and heavy enough. Love that song Workin' Man.
