They had a light-up Jesus on their mantle
A life-size, backlit face I swore was Willy Nelson.

"Nice Willy Nelson...thingy," I said.

"Um. That's Jesus," she said.

"Really?"

"Yeah. If you start over there and walk across the room, his eyes follow you."

"Hmmmm," said I. "Kinda creepy." She looked at me warily, as if my squeamishness over the light-up Jesus might indicate some sort of demonic posession. But then the other woman started talking and I went back to wondering why I wasn't downstairs with the band.

This is always my dilemma at band practice in certain circles. I'm a musician, so I want to be where the music is, but if the band is all-male, many times the wives/girlfriends of the musicians expect me - a female as well - to visit with them. But I was there with a male friend, checking out the new blues band he's joined. I really wanted to be in the basement supporting him and listening to the tunes.

Still, I decided to be polite when the wife of the lead singer invited me to tour their house. She seemed pretty engaging and cool at first. After she told me a tale about doing shrooms while riding a Harley, I was thinking she was kind of funny and cool and worth getting to know. But I had my doubts.

The lawn jockey put me off, but I only caught it from the porch - didn't see it driving up - so I wasn't sure what "race" the silly thing was. Some folks have Caucasian lawn jockeys and I suppose that wouldn't bother me but the black ones always do.

As the evening wore on, the Wife of Lead Singer waxed drunk and poetic about her love for Indians; cheesy faux Native American Art was everywhere (watched over by the Jesus/Willy light-up head) so I didn't doubt her. She told a story about going into a "finer" department store in a nearby town in her leathers, only to be treated like dirt by the sales staff. Oh, by golly, she called the manager and had that bitch fired! Don't they know Harley riders have lots of $$$$$????

Then I went into the bathroom and noticed the old Durham tobacco signs with all the gross caricatures of blacks. I was disgusted. Some folks may view those items as "collectibles." I find them extremely offensive. As offensive as the cheesy Indian art? Worse.

The two women must have caught my vibe, because the more vacuous one started baiting me, calling Deep Throat a snitch, blah fucking, freeper blah blah. I held my own and finally said, "I am a raging Liberal and I make no excuses and take no prisoners...." and proceeded to lay out my very simple philosophy for them. Before I could finish, they were admitting * was a fucking nutjob motherfucker.(I never got to ask why Nixon wasn't.)

More conversation ensued, with some interesting discoveries made, but then the image of a local politician appeared on the TV screen next to the Light-Up Jesus head. This particular politician has been indicted with a few others in a bribery sting. I believe five of the guys are white and this guy is black. So Miss Spider-Who-Only-Seem-Vacuous proceeds to look me in the eye and say, "just like a n___."

Oh, I knew it was coming. The Racist's "test." I say the "n" word and watch your reaction. Are you with us Whiteys or not?

I wanted to slap her, verbally if not physically, but our Hostess with the Mostest got up from the sofa and called her in another room before I could say anything so I used that as my cue to join the band. Guess she knew things were about to get ugly if she didn't redirect her guests, because I was ready to go off and it had to have shown on my face.

I grabbed another beer because I was simmering, just hating these fucknuts, wondering how you can play blues and hate the people who created it, how you can revere Native Americans without understanding their most basic philosophies, how you can rant about an uppity white woman treating you poorly because of the style of your dress, yet your home demeans a whole race of people because of the color of their skin.

And even though I didn't come there to play, even though I told one of the cooler guys "no thanks" when he tried to hand me his guitar, by the time I finished that beer I was ready to smoke em. "Gimme that guitar."

So I watched the two husbands of racists (who no doubt join their wives in the mindset) lose the smirks on their faces and watch their eyes pop open cuz I was ON. And I sang a little about prejudice and people who don't have the answers and I kicked those motherfucker's asses and then walked out without saying a word to the bitches.

Mrs. N-word comes out to the car as we're leaving and proceeds to repeat over and over, "You sang good. You sang so good." Fuck you, I wanted to say. But I just thought to myself, Yeah, I know. I "sing good" all the time, and you're an ignorant asswipe ALL the time.

But Jesus is watching from the mantle so it's all okay....

And that was my fun night out this week.

1. Now that's cool...
You sound fantastic; do you have any mp3's of your stuff? I'd love to play them on my show...

You did good.

Actually, I am hoping to record some stuff later this summer. But that's a mere hope. Thanks for asking. If I get anything together I'll PM you!

4. Happened Wednesday night
and I've been fuming ever since. I regret not going off on the final racist comment, even if it would fuck up my friends's new band situation. Who the hell wants to make music with heartless racist fucks? There can't be any soul to that music.

5. That's the thing
There is no soul in music made by people like that; it's worthless.

6. That's what I say
and I hope he gets out of that situation. But how in the hell do people play the blues and hate black people? How?

And, on a lighter note, what kind of stuff do you play, enigmatic?

7. I can't figure that out, either..
It makes no sense..

I started out playing Harcore Punk (Black Flag/early Husker Du), then when I was in bands in most of the 80's it was more straight ahead rock/blues (Tragically Hip-like, I guess); by the time of my last band we played Uncle Tupelo-inspired alt-country, heavy on the heartache-drenched feedback.

I DIY now; the stuff I'm putting together is much more quiet, almost folk-like, but uses alot of traditional and non-traditional "folk" instruments in weird ways (harmonica drenched in overdrive, synths recorded w/ heavy echo, that kind of thing)to color the lyrics and music. Hopefully that makes sense..

10. Ooh, sounds cool
I am going back through some old song i love (covers) and rearranging some of those awesome chords. More folky these days myself, but I like bluesy, rockabilly, alt-country stuff the best.

Ever hear of Dave Sutherland? Check out some of the stuff on "Comfortable Junction" or "American Refrigerator." He's from the UK but he has steel guitar and mandolin and bluesy piano in his tunes. Great writer. I'll try to find you the link. But I'm geting sleeeeepy now....

8. I love the very first part of that story...
"Nice Willy Nelson...thingy," I said.
"Um. That's Jesus," she said.

Hilarious.

As for the rest, I'd have probably bit my tongue like that too, I'm pretty non-confrontational. I definitely know what you mean about wanting to just go off, though. Been in that situation more than once.

Sounds like an episode of "This American Life" -- the perspective of a sane person in an insane situation. A well spun tale... I've been there, trying to make something musical happen when there's a deep divide in personality and politics and such... thanks for sharing the story.

That show is hilarious, but I fear I'm not that good. I just had to share the experience with my fellow DUers.

I just DO NOT understand how people develop these views of hating other people yet believe they are still "good Christians." Jesus wasn't Caucasian. Do they know this?

Thanks gmoney! :headbang:

Glad you finally told your story, and that I found it.

Have I told you lately that I love you? ;)

You told it very well - and it's hugely (HUGHly?) funny and vomit inducing sickening, all at the same time. You, of course, kicked ass. Sometimes, less is more - and you probably left those "women" feeling very inadequate in more ways than one. I'm certain they were threatened by you. One of the 'guys' - runs circles around them intellectually - way cool - and smokin hot ----- ;) Something tells me they HATE you! lol

You RULE, sister.

Hey - it's only a 10 hour road trip to Kalamazoo.... ;)

And while I was out antigone382 didn't post under my name once!

So when are you going to be in Kalamazoo, Sister? Didn't you say end of June? That might be a road trip I can take. Either that or I'm flying out to WA sometime this summer.

Yknow, I just don't get people, Madrone. What the hell? I'm REALLY trying to maintain low tones - to become a calmer, more flat affect human ;), but damnit, these yahoos make it so hard.

We need a thump on the head avatar. *poink*

34. Well then, you DEFINITELY need to hook up
w/ Trisha. She's a great kid - I ended up her unintentional mentor when she was 15, and I was around 23/24. I rented a room from her meth addict mother - also my coworker. It was NUTS - and Trish and I clung to one another for sanity. She's (I think) 24 now - and she's awesome.

You didn't say if you were fo'serious about giving her your number - so I will NOT until I know for sure.

I wish I was coming too.

But I think I could personally do without the carnie. lol

I'm just kidding.

Sounds like quite the evening. I have friends of friends who use the n-word a lot. I don't confront them-I grew up around it ( shamefully I admit to having used it) so I just let it pass and use it as a cofirmation of my being right.

23. I will almost always say something to end
that kind of talk around me. It creeps me out when people are truly racist.

I mean, we all have our racist moments. I've been most guilty of harboring racist thoughts against white people, but I try to remember there are good and bad in every tribe of people. I just don't want to be around anyone- no matter who they hate- if they demean an entire race of people. People like that have screws loose, no matter what color they are.

Great idea about the Jesus Light Up Head! Their own hatred will consume them, I bet.

thanks ;)

24. they don't care if it rains or freezes...
as long as they got their plastic jesus sitting on the mantle of their house.

it comes in colors, pink and pleasant, and glows in the dark cause its irridescent.

heh.

reminds me of a story my uncle told me about his days in the marine corp. he was dating some girl and they had parked somewhere with the radio on. that song came on the radio and my uncle starts goofing on it, then realizes the girl is mortified.

he asks her whats wrong and she tells him-in no uncertain terms-that he is a blasphemer and she wants nothing to do with someone who would mock a sacred song about the blessed jesus. she demanded he take her home right away and he never saw her again.
