Blech! I think I have Oral Thrush from antibiotics....help?
i have an appt with the doctor in 3.5 hours...I was on really broad-spectrum antibiotics last week and I think they gave me oral thrush. YUCK!

At least I *think* that's what it is.

Has anyone else had this? Is there anything I can do over the next few hours to get relief? At the present time, I think it's just confined to my tongue, but I saw a spot just a few minutes ago on the back of my throat......

blech!!!!

8. Nystatin
Is what I gave my babies when they got thrush. But we got it from a pharmacist.

Since thrush is yeast, it is likely that you can crush up some acidophilus pills into some water and swish them in your mouth. Yogurt loves to eat yeast as well. Gargle with some plain, unsweetened or squeeze it between your teeth like kids love to do.

9. another vote for yogurt
your dr will likely give you something to kill the yeast, and then everything in your body will be dead. Not a good place to be.

10. My stepfather had that
some idiot for a third world med school reccomended he suck on a monistat suppository! My stepfather was actually dumb enough to try that, but it was nasty as heck. A prescription cleared it right up, I think it was for nystatin.

For home treatemnt of thrush, check out any board, website or book devoted to breastfeeding (kellymom.com is a good one) because it's a common breastfeeding problem and usually colonizes both the mother's nipples and the child's mouth.

11. That is actually
how we used to treat thrush. Monistat suppositories orally, just suck on it. Nasty? Yes it was but that was the treatment we used to use.

12. Thanks, Everyone!
I'm eating the hell out of some plain Yogurt we got at the store last weekend....god it's bland...my mouth tastes like a smoothie :)

I hope she can give me something to help. My biggest fear is that I'm gonna go there and it's not going to be thrush but mouth cancer or something horrid (ah! The wonders of being a nursing student where you can almost...ALMOST....diagnose yourself...)

bleh.

13. First, I would be on an anti-candida diet
anyime you are given antibiotics. And take pro-biotics as well. That applies to everyone. You'll spare yourself a lot of grief. If you have thrush that means you might get or already have a candida problem in your intestines. Nystatin is not helpful for many people and actually makes it worse. Second, I would try a nutural remedy. Go to curezone.com and read some thrush remedies. The easiest and best one, and one that I do everyday for a clean mouth is a sesame sead oil rinse, followed by baking soda removal. It leaches all the toxins and yeast out and makes it a real inhospitable place for yeast. You need to cure the sesame oil first(boil with a tiny bit of water) and don't leave in your mouth for more than 4 minutes. The toxins will re-absorb. Good Luck

14. go to the drugstore, and buy a bottle of Gentian Violet
It's an over-the-counter item.

Gentian violet is a purple dye that was found to be an effective fungicide. You paint it on with a swab. It temporarily colors your mouth purple*. GV should work a lot faster than home cures like yogurt (which probably don't resolve the problem any faster than your immune system would on its own**).

Alternatively, you could go to the doctor for a prescription for fungicidal "-azole" lozenges.

* I know from experience that you can remove the purple color from natural teeth without difficulty. If you have a lot of restorations and veneers and stuff like that, you might want to consult a dentist.

Also, make sure you don't use the gentian violet that is dissolved in phenol (though you probably won't come across this anyway). The kind for medicinal use comes in a bottle dissolved in alcohol and water. The package will say "for external application only"; I think that's just cover-your-ass idiot labelling to prevent people from actually drinking it. GV is commonly used to cure oral thrush in infants and the candidal infection of the nipples in nursing mothers.

17. That was going to be my recommendation
But this explanation is much longer and clearer than mine would have been! Also, get some L.Acidopholus capsules to take for the next week or two.

21. GV works
we had to use it on LeftyKid a lot as a baby, he wouldn't get thrush in his mouth, he'd get yeasty diaper rashes. GV cleared it right up every time.

It is bright! purple and stains just about everything it touches, though.

16. Find yourself an old-time faith healer.
By tradition, they are able to: stop bleeding that is not of natural causes, remove the pain of burns and cure Thrush. They exist.

18. I had that happen a couple weeks ago!
It was painful and nasty! They put me on Diflucan and that cleared it up.

I got it after taking amoxycillin for a sinus infection.

23. I got it after taking Flagyl
that is some shitty shitty medicine. I think I'd rather have my vagina fall off than have to take Flagyl again. WORST.MEDICINE.EVAH.

Gave me a nasty, sour, metallic taste in my mouth that NOTHING would take away

Gave me the padoodles for the entire week I took it

Gave me horrid stomach cramps if I didn't take it during the consumption of an 8-course meal

AND...

I couldn't drink alcohol while taking Flagyl b/c it can make you really sick.

SUPER!

Now, I've got a vagina-mouth so that means MORE meds....bleh.

19. I have had it twice
a bunch of white crap on the roof of my mouth (listens for a chorus of "ewww".)
The pharamcist recommended yogurt. I switched to diet pop, since they feed off of sugar. I gargled with peroxide. I also ate lots of salty snacks (BBQ potato chips being my favorite weapon of choice), figuring that salt is hostile to many life forms. It was gone in less than a week.
Later when I googled acidophilus, it said there that thrushes come from your stomach, not from the outside.

25. I second the advice about yogurt and acidophilus.
Thrush is a yeast infection and the acidophilus bacteria helps kill the yeast.

27. Pro-biotic.
Your local health store will have a selection. (I went with the smallest bottle/cheapest & it worked almost immediately). Doctors never seem to tell you about the thrush side effect...and how to prevent it.

Eating yogurt's good - but imo everyone should keep a bottle of probiotic in their fridge and start taking it as soon as you start on a course of antibiotics.
