win 98 still won't load, any ideas? |
|
I restored the old register, no luck. I deleted the lines it did not like, no luck. Now it locks up after 'msmouse.vxd' during step-by-step confirmation.
Any ideas? (No, I do not want to buy a new computer :)

1. I would suggest a Windows reinstall. |
|
When it gets to the point where VXD files won't load, it's usually something corrupt in the OS files.
It could potentially be a hardware issue like bad RAM or something, but I doubt it.

4. to find your windows key using regedit.. |
|
Click Start>Run and type regedit. Click OK and drill down to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
Look in the right hand pane for the value ProductKey.

only one way to find out. BTW.. there should be no need to do a clean install of Windows to repair that corrupt mouse.vxd. Just reinstall over your existing OS.

Learn to read and offer advice that actually helps or stay out of threads asking for help.
Giving a non-sensical answer like "buy a Mac" is like going to your mechanic for a brake job on your Ford and being told to "buy a Chevy."
It never fails, anytime someone asks for help with a PC problem and specifically says they will NOT buy a new machine, some little Mac fanboy tells them "buy a Mac buy a Mac buy a Mac."
Yes, get a life! If you aren't going to offer real help, don't bother replying to such threads.

26. It gets old doesn't it? |
|
Every time someone asks for help with a PC, there's always one person that although they know the person doesn't want to buy or can't afford to buy a Mac, they always have to trumpet their little call "buy a mac buy a mac buy a mac."
Even when they're specifically told "I don't want to buy a new computer," they spout it "buy a mac buy a mac buy a mac."
If someone wants to buy a Mac, they'll say "hey, I want to buy a Mac, can someone who knows about Macs give me some info?" They won't say "hey, I'm having a few problems with my PC and don't want to buy a new computer."

10. Start your computer in Safe Mode |
|
To do that, as your computer boots, hit the F8 key and a boot menu will come up. Use your up/down arrow keys to select Safe Mode.
When it boots, run MSCONFIG, and uncheck everything in the Startup tab. Then reboot.
You probably have a corrupt driver or file trying to load, and it's freezing your machine. If it boots without your startup stuff, recheck everything one by one, rebooting after each item, until you find the item that is causing the trouble.
