Finally, an American driver is in with the Really Big Boys

Just a test driver spot, but a real vacancy can't be far behind. He's doing quite well in the feeder series GP2. (See pic below from Monaco)

Speed Lands Third Red Bull Seat
Friday, 03 June 2005 16:55

American Scott Speed will drive the third Red Bull car at the Canadian and United States Grands Prix, the team confirmed on Friday.

The young GP2 driver impressed Red Bull in today's test at Silverstone and will get behind the wheel of the third car on Friday ahead of the Montreal and Indianapolis races.

"This is an incredible opportunity for me," said Speed. "Putting aside the fact that my second appearance at a grand prix will be in my homeland, it is really exciting to be driving an F1 car in front of a big crowd.

(snip)

Formula One has not had an American driver since Michael Andretti in 1993.

1. My prediction
He'll never do well. It's his name. Speed. For a racing driver it's just too corny.

3. I'm telling you, it's no good!
It's even alliterative. If he changed it to something like (say) Miguel Badenhof, then there'd be nothing standing in his way. But Scott Speed? Never. It may be ok for Indy (or whatever it's called), but it's just a not Formula One name.
