NYC Metro Area DU'ers: Damn! I hate losing radio stations...
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 07:41 PM by mcscajun
...to new formats, that is.

I get out of work this afternoon and turn on the radio...WCBS-FM 101.1

Been playing the oldies since forever. Recently dropped the 50's music and put Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees on as the morning DJ.

It's not the only station I listen to...but it was a recent favorite for when I don't feel like listening to WFUV or my Grateful Dead/Allman Bros/Cajun Music tapes. :)

Sooooooo...it's 4:30...and they're playing some kind of crazy 'novelty' loop over and over and over...in and out of the car to pick up pizza...it's still playing. Weird. 5:00 PM...Jack-FM. We play what we want, you don't tell us what to play. Launches into the Beastie Boys' "(You've Got to)Fight for Your Right To Party." It was then I realized that in nearly every piece in the 'novelty' loop that ran for at least half an hour, "jack" was an element. Ugh.

I hit the station website to make inquiry...everything looks good...same as it was last week. That was at 5:30. Now it's 8:30 -- and the old site is gone, and JackFM is in its place. Total wipeout.

:(

FUCK "Surprise" New Format Changes!!!

1. Not in NY, but I heard about this today...
Don & Mike (a talk radio show) were talking about it. It really sucks. The only oldies station here in town did the same thing about a month ago or so. Not sure what is with this movement to "Jack" but i think it stinks.

2. I've heard 92.3 is changing format
Once Howard Stern goes over to Sirius. It's a damn shame, it was about the last station here where you could hear Depeche Mode, then NIN, then Soundgarden, etc. Like there aren't enough rap/hip-hop stations in town. At least there's Q104.3 for classic rock (unless that changed formats again?).

Oh well, the only radio I listen to is AAR and KTU for some dance music. There's nothing good on. I was thinking of getting satellite radio, if Dr. Demento is carried on it. So sick of the homogenized crap.

3. Q104.3 Classic...and not.
They've 'redefined' classic to include much newer bands that couldn't truly be called classic.

:sigh:

Oh...and if you're looking for Dr. Demento-like stuff...check out this site of a NJ DU'er:

7. Thanks for the link!
I've resorted to downloading best of shows from Usenet cause it seems like nobody carries Dr. Demento anymore. I miss my funny music and filks, dammit!

That's a shame about Q104.3. What's a rock fan in NY to do? Every station here is either gangsta rap/hip-hop or whatever Pop Tart the Disney channel is pushing. :(

10. Hey Infinity: You don't know Jack!
Mom used to keep the car running in the parking lot up in Conn. so she could listen to a few more minutes of the Doo-Wop Shop. My favorite: The Kingtones' rendition of "Blue Christmas". It so happens that the Kingtones are from Japan: "I'll have a broo Chrissmas, broo..."

Who's gonna keep the c ar running so they can keep listening to Jack (or is that Jack Shit)?

21. Oh, fucking crap.
Driving July Kid to Japanese lesson tomorrow is going to be painful without the oldies. I'm living in a time warp when I'm in my car, flashing back to my youth and staying awake singing along.

Crap. Fuck. Crap.

24. "Jack" is the hot new format.
Very broad playlists and loose formatics. "Jack" stations usually have libraries of anywhere from 1200-2000 songs in rotation, compared to 300-500 for most stations.

(Of course, I'm a little biased in its favor, since it's pretty much a bastardization of a format called "Fred" which Bill Gravino and I created at a station we ran back in 1999.)

I'm shocked that WCBS would switch to Jack, however. If I had to lay money I would have predicted WNEW would flip to it.

At least in the NY Market.
