I feel no need to point out where I F**ked up. Just make my correction and run.

2. It it is in a thread with a lot of controversy or if my post might set
somebody off, yes. Easier than defending ones self against charges of changing a post after someone else replied to it.

Sometimes, if just being silly or glib, not always gonna explain.

7. Good point, but I never try to change the meaning of my posts, just
fix typos or add words that I left out, shown in the manner of 'sed'

Edit: s/original text/new text/

27. Same here, but it is good to let others know that you just fixed a typo
Sadly, there are baiters and trolls who will twist and lie. I basically try not to give them leeway to attack my integrity. Have seen others being accused of changing a post and have seen a few who actually did after they got a bunch of heated responses. The latter is just plain chicken shit, but some have pulled it in an attempt to provoke productive people around here.

Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 08:13 PM by brainshrub
If I add a detail that might alter the meaning. Otherwise no.

I'd say I alter 70% of my posts in some way.

ON EDIT: Lowered the percentage a bit.

4. yes....
To me, the issue is making clear that I didn't change the sense or major points in my posts AFTER others have responded, or if I have, making sure everyone knows it up front.

5. My policy (and I am a lousy typist)
If I catch the error right away, I fix it without explanation.

If the post has taken a response, I give a brief, not very informative explanation.

10. NO!
But sometimes I edit and say "Edit~" and write something else in.

It's too much typing if you're just correcting spelling or errors.

16. While I understand your point, I generally do it just to simplify matters.
What I edited might not have been germane to the discussion, but people stumbling upon the thread later don't know that, and might wonder.

18. I'm always adding something in that I forgot to say.
I like that I can put it in, as opposed to real life, the chance slips by and you're screwed.

Now if it were very serious stuff and I needed to clarify, I edit on panic mode, cuz I'm never really confrontational, of course unless someone really pisses me off.

32. Wasn't there a time when the red edit message didn't show?
I lost a few brain cells during the primaries on DU, but I was thinking at one time, you could edit and there wasn't a message so unless you added the 'editted for' people didn't know you had.

As you can imagine, that led to some HUGE flames with people accusing others of changing things after they had pissed everyone off.

Am I remembering this right? Anyone?

34. Somebody else has probably said the same thing,
but I only use an "on edit" when I think it will make me look clever or attentive. That illusion of "thoughtful."

Confidentially, this tactic really pulls the quality dames.

If they're going to accuse me of changing the meaning of my post when all I did was fix a typo, then saying that all I did was fix a typo is not going to change that.

And sometimes I just feel like changing the meaning of my posts. Like now. j/k

45. I do only because I used to argue on "other" sites
and people who wanted to pick the arguments would discredit you every single time you edited something-even if only for typos (which they would also point out as a reason that your argument was not sound). Actually, it's no longer an obligation so much as it is a habit.
