Tornado Warning
I'm under one until around 7 am. This sucks because I'm stuck at work and we have a history of getting hit by them.
Oh well.

25. Ummm....west of KC is Kansas.

Are we really under a watch? I've spent the whole day picking up, unloading and spreading mulch in my yard. Can you believe we got 4.5" of rain last night? The mowers were supposed to be here 2 days ago. Looks like it's going to be monday at the earliest. I can't stand the grass this long!

On edit: I realize that this thread was started yesterday! I had to drive to the airport last night at midnight to pick up a friend. It was one of the most white-knuckled drives I've ever had to do. My car hydroplaned more than a dozen times on the trip.

31. I meant east of KC.
I was really tired when I posted that earlier. We are west of almost everything else in MO so it is a common slip.
And I heard that we have the chance of more nasty weather tonight so have fun.

41. That is a weird area in general.
At first we were supposed to be hit on 2 hwy (if it isn't the tornadoes hitting 2 hwy than it is the calls about the UFO's)but it jumped over to 58 and then around 50 hwy so it just hit the southernmost edge of town.

7. It happens here so often that it is pretty common.
I admit that before my daughter was born, if I was woken up to the sound of the sirens I just threw my blanket and pillow on the floor and went back to sleep. You become blase some years. This year has been pretty mild at least.

36. Really.
It has been incredibly mild for tornado season the past year or so. It's been strange. But that tornado that we had on Oct.29 which was a touchdown in town was strange too.

8. This is going to sound sick and twisted, but
talk like this makes me miss home. Green sky still has the power to scare me, but that kind of thing is extremely rare around here. And I think about the storms we get back home, leading me to think of home, leading me to be homesick.

MO than when I lived in WI. I live in a town now that is known to attract them.
At least the season has been very mild so far.

I found one on a tv station link. It's a little like this but more eery. It's just really hard to explain until you really see it.

Also a link of the site. They have some good tornado pics. It's a station out of OK and they have a chaser working there.

45. It's kind of cool to watch them.
Some people get a paralyzed feeling when they come really close. They can't move from where they are standing. A few people have said that watching the funnel is almost hypnotic and I'd believe them. When the funnel starts to dip you just want to stand and watch it happen.

I'd hate to be constantly dealing with tornado warnings. It seems that MD, PA, DE, and NJ get more tornadoes than they used to, and an F3 hit a few miles away from me (hit Limerick, PA) about 10 years ago. There were 3 fatalities, as it struck a development at night.

29. In May 2003
we had 38 or 39 (can't remember but it was one of the two) touchdowns in the course of one week. All were F1 or F2 but still it is pretty messed up. And my uncle's town got hit by a microburst last night. They still do not have power.

14. hit about 11 miles out (southwest)
It was only an F1 so not too much to worry about. That was earlier this morning. I was working the motel (can't log on at the other job so if I'm here than it's easy to know where I am working that night) and I had to wake up the guests, herd them together and deal w/ a couple of cryers. That's always fun.
I hear we have another round coming at us starting at around 6 tonight. We'll see what this brings. It's been an especially light season this year.

Sounds like you earned your pay. I grew up near a town that was hit with an F5. Looked like a war zone afterwards. Glad you're ok. That would be the one drawback of living down south. Dealing with tornadoes and not always having a basement.

Ground floor just stayed in their rooms knowing to take cover in their bathroom if it hit.
F5's are awful. Never been through one that bad.

18. Yes they are bad.
Thankfully I was on the farm about 10 miles away from the town when it hit. It was bad enough where I was but worse where it leveled churches, schools and other buildings. Only one person died which was a miracle.

A couple of photos here:

http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/arch/cases/960419/dmg/home.rxml

I can't imagine what it'd be like if it was anything worse!

I was laughing with a lady from Missouri one time after a PTA convention out in DC where they had a tornado warning. The women from Missouri and Illinois and other states where you GET tornadoes were looking for shelter and the rest of the delegates were non-plussed. I think maybe you have to clean up from or live thru a couple to fully appreciate how bad even the little ones can be.

46. Yes you do.
I remember a bad one a few years ago in St. Peter, Minnesota. That was awful. From the TV pics it looked like total devastation over much of the town. I hope they've recovered from that. But I can tell you that the date May 15, 1968 stands out in the minds of NE Iowans.

My brother got pulled off of base at Fort Sill to assist w/ clean-up back in '99. He said that it sucked to get hit by that many tornadoes at once but he loved being away from the base. He hated Sill.

44. Wow... I'm so amazed by these monsters
I have had hubs pick up bootleg videos of tornadoes, first hand accounts, it just fascinates me to no end.

I'm not brave though AT ALL... I have nightmares after I watch them and I do it over and over again. Sick, I know.

I live on LI, NY so we have only gotten a handful of warnings and they've been in the last few years. What do I do? Hide, with my tornado radio and a flashlight, and plenty of drinking water, and a blanket. LOL.. one tornado hit five towns away from here a few years back. I've been here 35 years and it happened once. What a chicken shit!
