1. It depends on who it's from.
Whether it's a lover, platonic friend, a co-worker, or my child sort of changes it to a degree. Overall though, I like compassionate and courageous. :)

3. I chose courageous.
I remember an incident many years ago when I decided to try sky-diving for the first time. One of the other beginning jumpers was an ex-Marine. And he really look tough, crew haircut, tattoes, muscular, etc. Well, anyway, when we were in the plane on our way up to jump, he looked and me and said, "Lady, you got guts." Actually, I was quite flattered.

2. I think compassionate would be my choice.
To me it encompasses kindness.

Interesting poll. What is your choice?

11. Really?
I like intelligent people as well as the next person, but I've never seen a person use compassion or kindness to abuse other people. But I've seen plenty of intelligent folks use their intellect to abuse people. (Karl Rove is an example.)

13. That's the one that makes me feel good
I guess I think the other qualities, like kindness, should be a matter of course while intelligence is a special gift.

19. that's why I never liked it - the gift part
makes it sound like all the reading and studying I did had nothing to do with it. So I would prefer "scholarly" to "intelligent". Even better is "funny".

21. I think so
and I was only 1 hour and 19 minutes after VelmaD's post #16 which I had not read since I was scrolling through the thread. So I tip my hat to her.
Of course, it is less of a compliment if you are not trying to be funny ("Funny? You think I'm funny? You find me humorous?") but I am almost always trying.

6. Courageous
Bravery and I have never been close friends. So when I take a deep breath and try really hard to be courageous and somebody notices.... It really means something to me.

Khash.

18. "courageous" cuz of what Maya Angelou said
Edited on Sat Jun-04-05 10:47 AM by nuxvomica
"Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can't practice any other virtue consistently. You can practice any virtue erratically, but nothing consistently without courage."

23. "You crack me up!"
Actually it depends. If it's someone I don't know well, a work acquaintance, for example, I consider it high praise to be told that I make them laugh. I love to make people laugh!

But I want to be remembered as deeply compassionate and caring as well as OMFG funny.

26. "You are just like your mother"..from anyone who ever knew her
or "you remind me of your grandaddy" from anyone who ever knew him.

I am sure my sisters would agree wholeheartedly.

Other than that, compassionate is probably it, followed by
being a lot of fun to be with
