Folks with cat allergies....
we have some friends coming over for dinner this evening, and my buddy has cat allergies. We're going to move our 2 cats into the basement for the duration, comfy couch, food and water and cable, so they'll be fine :p, we've vacuumed, and done a very solid clean-up upstairs and in the dining room. Is there anything else we could do to make his visit a little more comfortable?

1. make sure there are hard non upholstered chairs for him
to sit in. I have horrible cat allergies and sitting in a fabric covered chair or couch guarantees an attack.

2. It's good that you have food, water, a comfy couch & cable for the cats.

3. Our dining room chairs are wood.....
solid, no covering....we're barbequing and will be outside for the majority of the time, drinking brew etc. It's mostly for when we're eating.
We were hoping for better weather and were planning on setting up a big ass shade tent thing and a table underneath it in the backyard, but weather is too risky at this point.

5. Its up to him- I have strong allergies to cats
but the worst thing I can do is pet them and then touch my face. My eyes will start itching and I'll be sneezing all over the place.

It sounds like you've done everything YOU can do to make him comfortable.

his girlfriend said for us to not sweat it too much, he'll be fine. I just want to make the effort, you know?

10. I am very allergic to cats, and I have a dog who doesn't understand them
but at heart I love all animals. So if there's a friendly one its hard to resist.

We never had a cat growing up. When I was a teenager I used to come home from an afternoon babysitting job sneezing and rubbing my eyes- We knew it was something at the house- the cat. It was hard for me to just stop petting it - or at least wash my hands immediately afterwards - even though I knew I would be miserable if I didn't.

7. Easy Answer: Bomber Jackets
Put bomber jackets on the kitties and it will keep the dander from sloughing off making for a comfortable visit. B-)

9. Have one to those ardrenaline syringes handy. You know, >
like the one John Travolta pounded into Una Thurman's heart in Pulp Fiction.

11. I carry an Epi-Pen
...but that's more for anaphylactic shock than anything else. ;)

As a cat allergy sufferer, just be prepared for your guest to get progressively more miserable as the night goes on. He may want to stand outside quite a bit; try to make him comfortable if you can.

And as to the girlfriend's "he'll be all right" thing -- that's what everyone who doesn't have allergies says! :D

It's not life-threatening, it just sucks like a bad, bad cold with itching going on. I actually do better if I have to be exposed if I'm drinking caffeine, rather than beer.

12. As I mentioned above....
....we do plan on being outside for the better part of the visit. The temps are supposed to be in the low 60's so we'll be fine. It's the possibilty of showers that may force the party in.

15. Depends on how allergic they are. My brother is so allergic to cats he's
allergic to me! When I visit him, he has to throw away the bedding I sleep in. He puffs ups, turns red, and has trouble breathing. May I suggest a barbeque outside.
