Because some herbs lack sufficient documentation and are based on misleading claims, it's easy to overlook that. I wouldn't say that 100% of available herbal treatments are effective, but I'd be a fool to say 100% of them AREN'T.

Every time I get a scratchy throat, I'm off to the health food store for echinacea drops...

... I try hard to remember that Christianity is a little more then Crazy-People's Far-Right Politics.

But as someone who has lost a partner and a parent to cancer and is married to a cancer survivor, I despair daily of this dangerous, unpardonable and supremely unhelpful mumbo-jumbo and the freaks and bigots who peddle it.

I know someone who is a fundy Christian, and a friend of hers has colon cancer. She is going through the standard medical treatment of surgery, chemo, and radiation- but the cancer has spread to other organs anyway. My friend thinks she should have stuck to prayer alone or natural healing methods- that maybe God is punishing her friend for a lack of faith. You can't win with this belief system.

People shouldn't spend money on chemotherapy; they should send it to Jan Crouch, who'll pray over a pile of letters and checks. One has to wonder whether she ever had cancer in the first place.

It's fine for Jan Crouch to choose whatever medical treatment she wants. However, her motives for preaching the power of prayer is purely financial. It is also very dangerous for people that take her up on it.

Sometimes, I think liberals aren't thinking into the future. Instead of slapping Jan Crouch around, we need to be leveraging the fact that she made a legal _choice_ about her medical care, yet the religious right would deny the rest of us to make similar _legal_ choices about our own health care.

A Republican friend of mine keeps me informed on certain sordid details. Yes - I have Republican friends (media consultants in D.C.), but they're old school, Goldwater types, not the neo con type and they'll talk freely about the gawd freaks.

I actually ran into them in Washington National Airport once, many years ago, and it's what stimulated my "interest" in them. No incident, whatsoever, but, since I'm a detail freak and love to analyze people by silly things like what they have in their shopping baskets, I made excellent use of my Raybans and observed them for as long as they were in view (for almost an hour, actually). The thing that impressed me the most was their entourage, all of whom kept a LOT of space between them and their employers. I was totally fascinated by one very seemingly minor detail: neither of them carried a single thing in their hands. The carried NOTHING. Someone in their entourage had the tickets, Jan's purse (the size of a mid sized car, btw) and all necessary traveling items. These self proclaimed "humble workers for the lawd" didn't carry a single, solitary item. And they were constantly ordering one of their employees over for something. Be it gum, lipstick, take some notes, whatever. Really fascinating. And Jan had her hair checked several times, too; constantly primping and checking her appearance in a mirror, held by some poor girl. Worst of all, they were cold and distant, even to the poor schlubs who were, essentially, running their lives.

It's good to be king.

And they pray a lot, their families and friends and members of there congregations come in and pray a lot. Their coverage does not include chemo or radiation, so they pray a lot.
