Meet the new member of the Redstone family:
As usual, we let the little guy pick the name. This baby duck is now called "Cheese'n." Two guesses as to what this is short for.

10. Nope. But who cares, when you get to
spend the afternoon next to the river, watching the eagles and herons and egrets and stuff, in an area where powerboats are phrohibited, no less?

I'm sure you know that "going fishing" doesn't always have anything to do with actually catching fish.

Thanks for asking. It was a great afternoon.

14. Yeah buddy! There's catching, and then there's fishing
most times the latter is better, and my wife never makes me sandwiches.

The saying goes the worst day fishing is better than your best day at work.

15. Amen to that, my friend. Especially when the fishng spot
is in a bird preserve. We got to see pretty much the whole Audubon catalog of water birds today.

5. That is a neat pic!
Cheese'n loves cheese or cheese crackers.

Cool.

6. What a sweetie pie, Redstone! And the duckling is just too cute.
How did you come by this lonesome canard?

17. It was waiting for us in the yard when we came home
from fishing today. We let it run around for an hour or so in case Momma Duck came looking, but apparently it was genuinely lost. And when it walked over to where I was sitting and climbed up my leg into my lap, I kind of couldn't chase it into the swamp and tell it to go home.

I figure there's a good chance the chicken will "adopt" it when it gets a bit older ("It" because it's too young to be able to determine if it's male or female.)

Just what I need; another bird to take care of. Why do they always have to pick me?

18. Because you are a kind soul. The animals gravitate to kind souls.
It's a -- well, it's not an empirical fact, but it darn sure is an anecdotal fact!

19. cute!
Our neighbors presented my landlord and his daughter with a pair of abandoned ducklings a couple of years ago ... we kept them in a laundry basket lined with old towels, until they were big enough to go out in the yard. They followed that little girl everywhere ... until they grew their flight feathers a couple of months later. (This is the good news -- they'll be grown-up pretty soon, and at least they don't need to be hand-fed like pigeons or owls.)

Just a li'l duck note -- you probably know this already -- but if your chicken's on medicated feed, you might want to substitute the unmedicated stuff when the ducks are out there. Apparently, if they get into it, the meds can have a bad effect on duckling tummies (they eat more than chickens, and tend to overdose themselves).

They pick you because you're a pushover. Word is getting around, you see.

20. No, no medicated feed for the chicken, no way;

we eat her eggs, and would just as soon not have antibiotics with our breakfast. Though thank you for pointing that out.

Me, a pushover? For animals? No, no way. Uh-uh, nope, not me. Absolutely not, and I mean it, this is the last time I'm going to raise an abandoned animal, I really mean it...No, really!

Damn it, they're not listening to me. Mr Stinky (the skunk, in case you haven't guessed) is skritching at the patio door...I have to go give him his midnight snack...more later.
