Did Van Halen's first album destroy disco? |
|
I keep thinking that it probably did, but what do you think?

3. And the stupid shit people dance to in clubs now is somehow better? |
|
Disco was absolute art compared to the drivel they call dance music today. I spent one night at The Beach in Las Vegas several years ago on a date, and had to just shake my head.

2. Disco only "died" in the US until new club music styles took over |
|
Most of the rest of the world continuted to embrace what is called "Italo disco". Pretty much the same music, just from Europe or whatever.
I doubt many conventional disco fans would have paid any attention to Van Halen, but who knows. :)

4. I'd call it a combined effort. |
|
Van Halen certainly was involved. But so were The Clash, Ac/Dc, Elvis Costello, Tom Petty, and The Knack. And believe it or not, the "Urban Cowboy" movement, which took the Travolta Trendies who had only been into disco since his previous movie anyway.
I know that horrid form of music has many fans around here, but "Disco Sucks" was my battle cry in 1978 and remains so today.

5. Ronald Reagan killed disco |
|
By executive order #1785. The one bright spot in his presidencies. I think he actually campaigned on that and that's how he won.

9. He was also responsible for the creation of the death metal genre |
|
My 80s metal bands wrote songs about Reagan and his policies. Without Reagan there never would have been Megadeth.

Megadeth was Thrash. But there were a ton of bands who fed off his and Poppy Bush's policies. D.R.I.'s simple "Reaganomics" song epitomized it.
Edit: Dave Mustaine is now a Born Again and an ardent Bush follower.

8. I don't know that it killed Disco. |
|
But I do know their semi-commercialized "Big Rock" sound helped bring Heavier bands into focus and birthed (along with Randy Rhodes and Angus Young) the era of the guitar hero. The album didn't kill disco but it did deal out a serious wound to it. Credit to them.
