Just got back from mocking Fred Phelps's crew (UPDATE, more photos)
Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 04:23 PM by ET Awful
The good reverend didn't deem it necessary to show up himself I guess.

I'll have more pictures to post later, but I thought this one deserved an immediate posting, he's broadened his scope a bit with his signs.

And the opposing view (who were much friendlier people)

EDIT: Added more photos

2. I just thought the "God Hates You" was a bit ridiculous.
What's funny is they were telling people that they were there to preach to them and save their souls. . . of course, they couldn't explain how that was possible if God already hates "you".

I still say it would be funnier than hell to see . . .say a Vietnam Veterans group meet up with them while they're toting the "God Hates America" sign.

There was also one carrying a Pope in Hell sign, I asked him why he wouldn't go down to South Boston with that sign, and he wouldn't answer me :).

and they protested George Bush's inaguration saying he is a fag enabler.

I have seen them desecrate the flag by drawing people humping on it.

32. People who kick Fred Phelp's ass get sued big time
I think every member of his family is a lawyer and if you get physical with any of them, they will sue you for everything. That's the lowdown on that.

Phelp's used to protest at AID's victims funerals until they got a restraining order against him. Can you fucking believe that? He truly is the spawn of Satan.

Any event will do for the Phelps bunch. Graduations, weddings, funerals, Billy Grahm conventios.

Did you like the signs with the stick figures in obsence poses? What a way to communicate. And usually it's kids holding those signs.

I'd call Phelps a rat bastard but that would be insulting the rats and their bastards.

34. I know. Billy Graham was having a convention for evangelicals or
something like that at a local hotel and they were there protesting.

I think that's when I first saw the lovely stick figure signs. One has a figure in a priest smock and another figure 'kneeling' in front of it.

Basically, if you're a minister and unwilling to condemn gays to hell and worse, then you are the enemy.

Why can't that man leave Kansas. We don't want him. We don't need him. He does not represent us at all.

This was at the Lexington High graduation being held at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass.

He showed up in the area because of an essay on Ellen Degeneres that won an award in Dracut, Mass (by an 11 year old if I recall correctly).

They are picketing an ELEMENTARY school because a student wrote an essay favorable to Ellen Degeneris (sp?).

I know a well-known resident of Brookline and gave him a heads-up last Friday night.

42. I know about something that happened at Brookline HS recently
that certainly would have set those folks off but I'm not sure if that's the particular reason they showed up. A gay organizaton had a table, I think with AIDS info, health info, whatever. Also on their table was some kind of 'manual' for gay activities that was not something that belonged on a table at a school--it was absolutely adult-oriented--and the org claimed it was not supposed to be there and was put there by accident. Caused some problems in Brookline

13. I ran into Phelps' grandson in a chat room when I was in college
I think he was too (KU). It was a politics channel, and he was in there spreading the Phelps' brand of hate for over an hour when I joined. Someone private messaged me to do something so I asked him about lesbians - if they were going to hell. Of course they were. I asked if AIDS was God's scourge on homosexuals. Of course it was. I then said, "But lesbians have one of the lowest AIDS infection rates of any demographic group. By your own logic, lesbians seem to be God's chosen people." He damned me to hell, and I said, "Yup, it seems like God REALLY REALLY likes lesbians. He must be a man after all." He damned us all again and left the channel.

They came to Tulsa once. I stood across from them with two signs - "God Is Love" and "Fred Phelps Is a Wanker."

I don't think Fred shows up at the protests anymore unless it has a lot of publicity, or there's a speaking opportunity.

16. You have no idea how upset that fucking person makes me - Here's why:
1. She's disrespecting the Flag

2. She doesn't even know that she's disrepecting the flag.

3. If someone told her that she was disrespecting the flag, I can guess what her reaction would be by the signs that she holds.

4. She's a homophobe.

5. She equates homophobia with patriotism (Again we come back to the flag)

6. There are plenty more people in this country who are just as stupid and hateful as she is.

7. Some are worse.

It's like saying that she prefers a that theocracy rule this country instead of a democratic republic under the rule of the Constitution that allows her to have her own preference of religion, despite how fucked up her beliefs are.

Talk about shooting oneself in the foot.

He had some choice words for Brookline High and was planning to go there today as well. Like Cambridge, Brookline is a liberal community--and a highly Jewish community--and those folks would not take to kindly to those interlopers. My friend is a firefighter in that town, and I told him that I hoped he'd run into them while he was working. :D

26. Fred Phelps just HAS to be a self hating homosexual...........
of this i have no doubt. I contend the man is indeed gay but hates the concept so much it manifests itself in his absurd campaign. He also must be sort of a Jim Jones type that can convince others (admittedly, mostly his own family) to think and act the same way. I read somewhere that the people and the city council of Topeka are pretty much fed up with his asinine antics but are hamstrung to do much about him.

Just down the road in the towns of Bedford and Concord were two very positive (and extremely well attended) grassroots events related Rep. Meehan's Iraq exit strategy resolution and Rep. Kucinich's Department of Peace resolution.

Go away, Rev. Phelps, the spirit of the American revolution is alive and well in the towns of its birth.

Nice shootin', ET! A few years ago my friend was in a production of The Laramie Project when Phelps and his minions showed up. They also did the Phelps-Protest-A-Thon where they raised money for the local GBLT center for every minute Phelps protested.

Phelps helped them raise over $1500.

44. Did I ever tell the story about how Phelps was jacked in the face at SIU?
He was "protesting" with a few other idiots in SIU's "free forum area" one afternoon. A big guy dressed in colorful taqiyah (head covering) and thobe (long gown) was walking along the sidewalk, and Phelps yells, "You Muslim devil!" The guy stops, turns, and leaps about eight feet. He doesn't even say a word; he just starts choking Phelps to his knees.

The three women he was with ran like hell, and about fifty people rushed to see this guy throttling the asshole. When a cop car beeped from the sidewalk about 100 feet away, the crowd split, leaving Phelps on the ground, gasping.

They never caught the student, and from what I read, nobody gave an accurate description of him, other than he was black.

I still laugh about it sometimes.
