Does Sauerkraut ever go bad? |
|
How can you tell?
I bought a bag of sauerkraut a few weeks ago, and put the leftovers in the fridge. Since the original packaging was refrigerated, is there a sauerkraut shelf-life which I am unaware of?

20. No, besides, I don't have kids. |
|
But my last name is Sauer.
Thankfully, my Dad changed his last name, from Sauermilch. (You can laugh your ass off now.) :D

21. Do you pronounce it with a Z? |
|
That would be the real Germanic pronunciation, I believe.

22. It was pronounced this way. |
|
Sour-milch.
In Germany it would have been pronounced sour-milk.

3. Yes, it can get some nasty bacteria if kept at room temperature |
|
In the 'fridge it's good for months or years.

There are darn few foods I can't eat. Beets are one of them. Sauerkraut is the other. It's sad, because I do have some German heritage. But what were they thinking?
P.S. Yay, I found my sig file --
The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists and other subversives. We intend to clean them out, even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country. --John Mitchell, US Attorney General 1969-72

17. It's good if it's rinsed before you cook it and you do interesting things |
|
with it, like mix it with Sweet Pepper Relish and simmer Johnsonville Brats in the mixture.
If you don't rinse it, it's fit only for serving on Hot Dogs...which is a great thing in itself.
I just Love Sauerkraut.

11. Sauerkraut in the refrigerator case generally has a shelf life approaching |
|
one year. Somewhere on the bag there would have been an expiration date in small print.
If it's properly stored in a covered container in the fridge, and nothing odd grows on it, it'll be good to eat for some months yet. :)

18. Now that's what I'm looking for! |
|
Because when you cook brats for one person, you tend to have a lot of kraut left over. :)

on all things under the heading of "food".(hint, hint: Zig Heil!!) Sauer Kraut can be a good medium for bacteria, so be careful with it.
