Saw him in Damn Yankees as a very old man. He came right down the aisle and stood by my seat waiting to go on. It was a thrill to see him live.

He didn't get married until about 1988 -- long after anybody would have cared about his sexual orientation. Longer still after anybody would have been shocked.

And coming to terms with one's own mortality (even if late in life) is plenty motivation for someone to desire to achieve a type of immortality by create little DNA copies of themselves that live on after one's death.
