If Holdem... Don't play anything other than AA, KK, QQ, JJ, TT and AK, AQ and maybe AJ suited.
if on the flop you don't either have the highest possible pair or a set or a flush draw (4 to a flush), dump it.
If 7 stud, play if you have AA, KK, or QQ or trips (3 of a kind) in the first 3 cards. Also 3 to a straight and 3 to a flush. If by 5th street (5th card), you have to have 4 to flush, up and down straight draw or 2 pair or better (trips are better, btw). Otherwise, dump it.
Bet the hell out of the rest and hope for good luck.

Poker Hands Chart
Royal Flush: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, Ten, all the same suit Hearts, Clubs, Spades or Diamonds
Straight Flush: Same as above but the cards are lower than the Ace.
4 of a Kind: 4 cards like 4 Jacks, 4 Aces
Full House (or Boat): Example 3 Kings and two Tens
Flush: All Hearts, or Spades, or Diamonds, or Clubs
Straight: Any five cards in sequence, Example: Eight, Nine, Ten, Jack, and Queen
3 of a Kind: 3 Kings, 3 Jacks, 3 Tens, etc etc..
