Those hills took a lot out of me the year I lived there. And there are lots of large universities for a mid-size rust-belt city (I got my M.A. while living there).

than they would charge if the store wasn't at the airport. It was great before all of the security changes occurred, because people who lived close to the airport could shop there. Now you can't get to the stores unless you have a boarding pass.

13. A clean and *relatively* inexpensive city, but the culture is trapped... |
|
in the 70s.
Seriously, Pittsburgh, and most of western PA seem trapped in the 70s. No wonder once students get their education they leave...I swear the people and politicians are trying to make it the stereotype of a rust belt city.

15. the O'Connor regime is going to be a fucking mess |
|
We need young blood, so they elect a mayor older than the outgoing.
Not to mention I believe that O'Connor is a conservative in democrat's clothing.
I really don't like him.
I hope his term is four years... no more

22. I agree - the fact that he will get elected... |
|
reinforces to me the belief that the city hasn't moved out of its 70s style of thinking...nothing gets done in that city. I always get the impression that ~75% of those living in Allegheny county (or western PA) never spent a significant amount of time living anywhere else to help put there situation into perspective.
For example, people in Pittsburgh still think that they have a great work ethic and the rest of the country doesn't. That may have been true a while ago, but I find it on par with the rest of country...plus a lot of other places do the same amount of work with half as much complaining.
It is too bad, because this area could have a lot going for it.

I've never lived any place that I liked more...but I simply couldn't stay. I felt that I would never have a friend my age if I lived there. The average age of the population seems to be 66.

17. It's not a very forward thinking city. |
|
The people, while very nice, seem to be trapped in the mind-set of "this is the way we've always done it, if it was good enough for our grandparents, it's good enough for us".
The young people do leave, in huge numbers, and Pittsburgh (Allegheny County) has the second oldest population in the country (second only to Miami-Dade, I believe). So yes, we're very old.
We need fresh new blood, and another renaissance, similiar to what we had in the 70's, in order to bring some vitality to the region. There is so much to offer here, we need to make the best use of the resources.

19. Everything is out of date |
|
The tax codes, labor laws, political set-up all seem to date from the 60s. And the city keeps cutting deals to keep businesses in downtown without thinking long-term. The Post-Gazette did a story a few years ago explaining how the city gets more tax revenue from five or six businesses on Carson Street than from. like, most of PPG Place because of the deals they cut.
It's in a downward political spiral, I think.

Thinking outside of the box is not smiled upon here. I think of the old management story at US Steel - if a worker raises his head, hit it...
As a result, you have a lot of people - even smart people with good ideas - who dont want to 'rock the boat'
That being said, the boat sure needs some rocking. This is why O'Connor concerns me - he's a silver hair fox who doesnt want to rock the boat and who won't have to live with the consequences of his adminstration.
I would have loved to see Peduto or Lamb (more the former - i don't think much of lab, but at least he is young) as the mayor, as we need some young blood who can make corageous and perhaps unpopular decision. That is not Bob O'Connor...

I went to Penn State, and it is amazing how big an issue it was.
I grew up in central Pennsylvania, but currently live outside of Pittsburgh. I call it SOFT DRINK! I absolutely adore Pittsburgh, but I'll never get used to the word 'pop'.
(On edit: just changed tense of one sentence.)

My solution: say pop to philly people and soda to pittsburgh people - that way i could annoy everyone... Besides, it shouldnt be an issue b/c at PSU we never drank the stuff, only beer.

Born in the 'Burgh.
Grew up in the 'Burgh.
Left and lived and worked in Texas for a time.
When I got a job offer back home I returned.
That was 20 years ago, and I am glad I came back.
I really love this town and its people. It's got big-city culture and small-town neighborhoods and people.
Pittsburgh is great place to live and raise a family.
Hope to see yuns here!
