Do you remember the phone numbers of your childhood? |
|
Isn't it freaky? I can't remember a phone number I've called a gazillion times in the last week and I remember all my friends phone numbers from childhood and of course my own from childhood.

Even though we got a new one when I was about 7, and even when I've gone years without thinking about it... I can still remember.
Ask me what I had for lunch yesterday, though, and you'll get a blank stare.

7. There are two I will always remember |
|
My sister has my grandmother's number- so I've been calling it for about 40 years. My mom had the same phone number for 49 years. She passed away in December and the phone was just recently disconnected as the house is on the market. I didn't know my sisters had turned it off and I called there last week looking for one of them. When the computer told me the number was no longer in service it damn near broke my heart all over again.

It was a heavy old black Bakelite dial phone too.

|
all the numbers stared with 758, so you only had to know the last 4 numbers. then 751 came along, and we used the 8 or the 1 to differentiate. now there are a few more exchanges and cell phones, so we have to use the whole number. bummer!

And the ENTIRE Chicago area had only one area code. 312. All you had to dial was the 7 digits.

As soon as I saw this post I remembered several numbers that I haven't dialed in over 20 years. Some that I probably only called a handful of times. I can see a snapshot of them in the little black book I had as a kid.

the phone number for the Dallas Times Herald Classifieds. The paper's long defunct and we've added an area code, but due to that snappy jingle being stuck in my brain, I will forever remember:

31. I remember my own number. |
|
It was the number my parents had from 1964 to 1992. When they moved in 1992, they kept the same last four digits and only had to change the prefix, so I remember that number too. When my folks retired in 2002, their phone number was so completely different from what I was used to, it took a while to memorize it. ;)
I also remember the phone number of my best friend from my junior high/high school years. I believe her parents still have that number. (And that reminds me - I should call her today. It's her birthday.)
