When Fred Phelps runs around saying GOD HATES FAGS, everyone is repulsed. When the Pope basically says the same thing only cools the rhetoric to appear reasonable, why is it apologists will defend him?

The Pope is the spiritual leader of tens of millions of people.

Fred Phelps has maybe a hundred dipshits in his brigade.

The Pope the symbol of faith to many many good people around the globe, many of whom look to him for guidance and succor but do not feel the need to obey every one of his teachings or laws.

Fred Phelps is a piss-ass midwest fascist, in the tradition of Gordon Kahl. No one but the ig'nint and the far-far-FAR-right listens to anything he has to say.

The Pope passes decrees and sets guidelines for behavior for his followers.

Fred Phelps hands out signs that say "GOD HATES FAGS" and holds tiny protests anywhere he can, usually to the derision and hurled insults of attendees of said events.

As a symbol of the Catholic faith, the Pope is open to interpretation. He can either be the be-all, end-all of a Catholic's creed, or he can be but an annoyance. However, to sling insults the Pope's way, even on some insignificant message board as this, WILL offend many a Catholic, even those who choose to separate the man from the faith. As an atheist, I can only look upon this crap and shake my head, but as an atheist with both dear gay friends and dear Catholic friends, I don't like to see either hurt or insulted.

The fact that the Pope is the head of a huge, accepted organization with a long-standing tradition should scare you more than the two-bit preacher from Kansas, RKZ. The Pope is in a more respectable position, so he has the power to do much more damage.
