15. Is it "Stand Up"?
If so.....On the "Intro" to "American Baby" it sounds to me like war effects (choppers, guns, bombs) and cash registers ringing - do you get the same impression. Pretty cool as I hear it.

DMB is a band willing to try to expand and experiment - for this they get my respect. Opening songs on "Stand Up" are good and then about midway through it seems to get bogged down. I'll keep listening even though some (many?) here enjoy bashing them.

Did you see the video for American Baby? There is one scene where they show the soldiers and then the next scene where you see the soldiers standing on a chess board.

25. I've just heard their tunes on the radio
and MTV. Never saw them in concert though. They probably have a decent show. I'm more into groups like AC/DC, Def Leppard, Stones. Pink Floyd is good too but I have to be in a special mood to listen to them. Makes me remember times I'd just as soon forget.

39. They are excellent live.
There is no set amount of time that they actually play. You can see that one of them just starts in on his own path and they tend to let him go for as long as he wants to.
I haven't been in a few years but you could tell that they really enjoyed playing live and even meeting their fans.

28. What exactly is it...
...that people hate about DMB? I haven't heard alot of his music but I have liked what I've heard. The only reason that I don't have any of his CDs at the moment is because I don't buy music as much as I used to. Just laziness mostly. But it seems that when people mention Dave Matthews they automatically know that an onslaught of insults against the man and his band is coming. What is it all about?

33. I don't know.
Alot of people don't like music that crosses genres like theirs does. If they can't put it into a neat classification then they don't like it.
I like the fact that I can put in any one of their songs and hear everything from rock to jazz to fusion to bluegrass to African beat. It's an interesting concept. And if you can ever do it, catch them in concert. Much better. They sound nothing like their cds. I've met a few of the members and they were always really nice too.

41. Actually, I heard "Some Devils"...
...during the closing credits of a movie. I'm pretty sure it was the movie "21 Grams". I didn't care much for the movie and that's how I know that I really liked the song. It's easy to like a song that you associate with a movie you liked. But in this case that particular song was the best part of the movie.

51. He doesn't open his mouth when he sings, for starters....
Other points:

His lyrics are trite even by 2005 standards.

His songs tend to have these meandering non-melodies; half of them I can barely remember when they're done.

He doesn't rock. At all.

He represents the post-Grateful Dead suburban-sprawl "trustafarian" genre in my mind....I can't hear his music without images of fratboys holding cups of keg beer aloft and screaming "whooooooooo!" being conjured up. It's the sound of the priveliged class. The sound of passing jeeps on an ivy leage campus.

He's like Peter Gabriel if Peter Gabriel sucked.

He's got one of the best drummers in the world in his band, but in order to hear Beauford's work, one must dig thru Matthews's nonsensical mushmouthisms and entreaties to "hike up our skirts a little more and show th' world" to him.

The harmonic climate I associate with most of DMB's recorded output puts me in the mind of a more "commercial" Rusted Root. Does this sound inviting to you?

I'm not offended by "genre-crossings." Point me in the direction of any of DMB's "genre-crossings" that haven't already been done better by Paul Simon or David Byrne and I'll buy you a cockatiel with an eating disorder.

Have I mentioned that he doesn't rock yet? Let me restate that: DAVE MATTHEWS DOES NOT ROCK.

45. Les Miz should be DU's anthem :)
It's just a universal good vs. evil theme...

Enjolras
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

Combeferre
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?

Courfeyrac
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!!

All
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

Feuilly
Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France!

All
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes
