7. My Etta James experience
In 1963, I worked for Hertz renting cars at LAX. On evening, Etta James came in and requested a car. I rented her a car, without thought, other than that she had to have a valid driver's license and credit cards. I didn't know Etta James from Patsy Cline, or Buster Keaton for that matter.
She was well known to management as a deadbeat, but wasn't in the deadbeat manual. I was almost fired for my actions, but wasn't because she wasn't in the manual. It was the only time I ever saw her, and to best of my recollection, I have never heard one of her songs.

11. my Etta James experience

Bought tickets for a Blues Festival at Rice Stadium some years ago, with BB King as the headliner and Etta also on the bill. Etta was the main reason I was going. I used to be a BIG fan, and thought she'd done some of the best work of her life on Island Records.

Good thing Magic Dick and Elvin Bishop were so damned good, otherwise the whole thing would have been a waste of time and money.

Etta did one of her famous no-shows... I heard from someone who was a scene-ster that she did get to the show but she was too blasted to go on.

I was so disappointed, that I never felt the same way about her again, and haven't made the effort to go see her again.

10. I saw her too
But I think it was the tour after "Some Girls"...maybe "Emotional Rescue"? They were booing her and I was so pissed. I was thinking, "don't these people know who the fuck they are booing?" I was floored.
