You ever heard of the phrase "The Armpit of America"??
Edited on Tue Jun-07-05 08:53 PM by SmileyBoy
Well, right now I'm taking nominations of towns for the official title of "The Sweaty, Smelly Taint of America". You know, a town that would make a regular armpit town look like Boston or San Francisco. If you make a nomination, feel free to give examples and reasons why you think the town or city deserves the title.

I hereby make my nomination for Glendive, Montana.

ON EDIT: I'm looking for a town or city that fits the description FIGURATIVELY, NOT LITERALLY (geographically).

Been there. Through there, anyway. Several times.

28. I lived there for 5 years
and loved it. But that town has gone downhill considerably since I Ieft it nearly 30 years ago.

Does that meat packing plant still stink up the town?

29. Emporia? I don't know. I haven't been there in 20+ years.
But my impression the first two times around was not good. Admittedly, I wasn't there long enough to explore it.

Tons of good live music, a vibrant college and several beautiful lakes nearby.

This is definitive. Find Beaumont on a map in relation to the Gulf of Mexico. It's the armpit of the nation.

And yeah, I lived there once upon a time.

14. Yeah, the smell of the refineries in the morning covers that base
I'm telling you, I've been lots of places, and you're going to have a hard time outdoing Beaumont:

-very Red part of TX
-just a few miles from Vidor, TX, where Cisneros had to post federal guards outside of the only black family's house in town.
-Not far at all from Jasper, TX, where the black man (James Byrd?) was dragged to his death.
-Just last year the city council decided it might be a good idea to rename Jap Road.
-The aforementioned refineries.
-No jobs, except for at the nice, newish prison.

I'm sure there's much more, but my brain has protected me with soothing forgetfulness about the whole bad episode.

Edited on Tue Jun-07-05 10:06 PM by Redstone
We played there a few times when I lived in Houston and played country music for a living. Like playing a gig on the Planet of the Apes.

I've been telling people ever since what a pit the place is. This was back in the 1970s, but I guess it hasn't gotten any better.

I would have nominated it myself if you hadn't done so first.

A paper mill and a creosote plant (the black tar stuff they dip railroad ties in). Stinks like nothing you'd believe, and half the town is downwind of it...

Also, crap for jobs, and a shitload of meth. But they've got a great college.

27. Jacksonville, Florida.......(More)>>>
Jacksonville is (and has) been an embarrassment to Floridians for many years. It's incredibly right-wing...Vote averages for Republicans run around 70 to 75 Percent....For many Years the First Baptist Church actually "Ran" the City.....Tickets for various infractions like speeding, improper lane change, Etc is Usually 600 to 800 Percent higher in the Poor areas than in the Middle class or Wealthy Areas..(Yeah right...Middle class people never speed)...
Jacksonville is the most Class-Conscience, Phony Bologna, Redneck, Hillbilly Large City I have ever had the misfortune of having to live in.

Got a Date with a girl from Jacksonville?
Be prepared to be asked: What Year and type of car do you drive?
What do you make each year? What are your parents worth? How much do you have in the Bank?

In Jacksonville the most nasty, cruel, uncaring republican people are treated like Gods IF...IF they have Money.

And Last...only in Jacksonville would the People elect a piece of human garbage like TILLIE FOWLER...who would make the John Birch society look like Mother Jones Magazine...
