Seems like someone says that about every crazed murderer. For some reason, I just can't fathom anyone saying that about this guy.

6. Yeah, they are on the ball aren't they.
They strip search grandmothers in wheelchairs and nursing mothers at airports, but let a guy carrying a bloody chainsaw and ax who looks absolutely deranged walk right in.

18. I saw a gag in one of the "Airplane!" movies that was just like that!
Truth does indeed outdo fiction more often that I'd like.

5. Um. Did you read the caption?
Emphasis added:

Gregory Despres is shown in this image from television. On April 25, 2005, Despres arrived at the U.S.-Canadian border crossing at Calais, Maine, carrying chain saw stained with what appeared to be blood, a homemade sword, a hatchet, a knife, and brass knuckles. U.S. customs agents confiscated the weapons, fingerprinted Despres, and then let him into the United States. Despres, the suspect in a grisly double murder in New Brunswick, Canada, was arrested in Mattapoisett, Mass., on April 27, 2005 and is being held in a jail there, charged with two counts of first-degree murder. (CP PHOTO/HO/WHDH-TV)

So, like, a guy can take a blood-stained chainsaw into the US, and customs agents wave him through? Did they even bother to call Canadian authorities to check if there were any people in Canada suffering chainsaw wounds?

:wtf:

7. Well, he IS white.
And his papers were probably in order. So not suspicious at all.

Another success for racial profiling!

14. Well YES, technically no crime had been reported. And I do believe
they held him for several hours checking with the policing agencies to see if any related crimes had been reported in order to find ANY reason to detain him.

I kind of get it.. it seems nuts, but it's not a crime to carry a chain saw covered in unidentified material.

9. AP story
http://www.theledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050608/NEWS/506080373/1039

----
Bill Anthony, a spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said the Canada-born Despres could not be detained because he is a naturalized U.S. citizen and was not wanted on any criminal charges on the day in question.

Anthony said Despres was questioned for two hours before he was released. During that time, he said, customs agents employed "every conceivable method" to check for warrants or see if Despres had broken any laws in trying to re-enter the country.

Anthony conceded it "sounds stupid" that a man wielding what appeared to be a bloody chain saw could not be detained. But he added: "Our people don't have a crime lab up there. They can't look at a chain saw and decide if it's blood or rust or red paint."

10. And then we have this sad post elsewhere.
Man with bloody chainsaw let in, but not my grandmother

They let this psycho in the country, but my grandmother is going to have to go back to Iraq. She got out by car a few months ago and stayed in a hotel in Jordan while my Uncle and Aunt in Australia pulled some strings to get her a 6 month visa down under. She's been staying with them since. But that 6 month visa is expiring and we've been trying to get her a U.S. one to no avail. They've been giving her a run around. Fill this form out and send it in. Fill this form out. Did you pay this fee? Pay the fee again. Fill out this form. We never got that form from you, can you fill it out again. Sorry we can't give you a visa you didn't pay the fee.

12. Wanna read some prime, US Gov't grade A bullshit?
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2005-06-08-border-suspect_x.htm

Anthony said Despres was questioned for two hours before he was released. During that time, he said, customs agents employed "every conceivable method" to check for warrants or see if Despres had broken any laws in trying to re-enter the country.

"Nobody asked us to detain him," Anthony said. "Being bizarre is not a reason to keep somebody out of this country or lock them up. ... We are governed by laws and regulations, and he did not violate any regulations."

Anthony conceded it "sounds stupid" that a man wielding what appeared to be a bloody chain saw could not be detained. But he added: "Our people don't have a crime lab up there. They can't look at a chain saw and decide if it's blood or rust or red paint."

(snip)

On the same day Despres crossed the border, he was due in a Canadian court to be sentenced on charges he assaulted and threatened to kill Fulton's son-in-law, Frederick Mowat, last August.

So, did anyone call the RCMP?
