Softball DU'ers: Rover or no rover?
Our coed team is playing in round two of our leagues playoff next week. If we win we'll face a team that spanked us with line drive hits.

We don't normally use a rover, but I'm beginning to think we should. If so, I'm wondering who we should put there, should we put a fast rangy person there who can be like a deep shortstop and make plays or should we put someone slower there and save the fast people for center and right becaudse they'll have them most ground to cover?

Anyone else here play softball and how do you feel about using a rover vs. four outfielders?

1. Played the mens industrial leagues for years.
Rover position, played properly is the most demanding of all. They must play both sides of the field, have good speed and a good arm. Our rovers also backed up our outfielders.
wouldn't play a game without one.

2. if you use a rover, make it a fast person
and good luck!

(Personally, I loathe playing with a rover. I loathe playing with four outfielders. But that's slow pitch.)

you need a good arm.. good agility. pretty much just the same as you need for a shortstop. they're gonna pick up whatever gets by the pitcher. have her/him play 20 ft. behind 2nd base. outs at 2nd will be easy, but the 2nd baseman & shortstop need to talk with the rover so they know who's covering what situations.

i agree that the faster players should be in left and center.
