The ones that Afghan women wear are cheery shades of blue or green. So many choices!

Because apparently right-wing American women can be fooled into thinking something hideous and restricting is nice as long as it's bright and colorful.

The best part is that if they ever realize what is going on they'll have to either keep quiet or admit that they believe in evolution.

I bet if they did they would be wading. And their hair would not be wet cause that is naughty too.

from the fundy crowd. But this is just crazed. How hot do you suppose those get-ups are? And the tan lines, wouldn't the be rather strange? And why just women? Why not men as well?
Freaking hilarious.

and I'll repeat what I've said every time:
To each her own. If someone feels she needs to wear such a thing, so be it. It's not for me to judge.

22. You think people are only going to make that choice for |
|
themselves? Because if that's true, like you said, to each her own. But what scares me is that many, many little girls are going to be forced into wearing this by their mothers. These girls are not only going to be tormented by other kids, but they're going to learn to be horribly ashamed of their bodies. Self-loathing is easy enough for young girls to pick up without their parents adding to it. So you may not feel you can judge, that's your opinion. I feel differently. I think, on behalf of woman like me who still carry the scars of being taught their bodies are shameful from their damaged parents, this is something we ALL need to address as a society.
I also think the very existence of something like this on the internet is a scary sign of what lies ahead if we allow right-wing fanatics to take over any more of our country than they already have. Sure, now it's a choice, exercised by a few people. But what if it ISN'T a choice a few years down the road? What if LAWS are enacted forcing women to cover up when swimming, or grocery shopping? Are you going to be okay with that?
Lastly, I apologize for not realizing this has been linked on DU before. My mistake, I guess I missed it.

25. I wasn't criticisng you for posting a frequently seen link; sorry for |
|
sounding so harsh.
I believe mothers have the right to teach their daughters what they will, to an extent. That includes what their children are to wear. I don't agree with what the women teach but I say it is THEIR right.
I too was messed up by parents. I agree it needs to be addressed. But we can't address the way a woman chooses to dress her daughters. On that level, it is not our right.
Finally, I disagree that the garments offered on that site are a harbinger. It looks to me like a mom & pop that caters to a tiny segment of our population.

29. This kind of stuff has been around for a while. |
|
I don't think it's indicative of the "American Taliban" coming. There have been patriarchal religions with submissive women dressing "modesty" and dressing "to please God" for years. Unfortunately, these groups bring their children up to believe that women are not as important as men, belong in the home and nowhere else, and that women should always be submissive to men. Girls are raised to go from their fathers' homes to their husbands' homes. I once came across a website with bulletin boards for such women, and the women were cautioned not to join and post unless they had received permission from their husbands to do so. Girls are discouraged from attending college, unless it is a strict Bible college selected by their fathers, often with the purpose of finding a husband. If a woman has no husband or father, she is to be cared for by brothers or other male family members.
I don't like these groups that oppress women in the name of God. In my mind, these behaviors are not edicts of God, but rules made by men afraid of losing their power.
However, to the best of my knowledge, none of them has tried to legislate their way of life or their style of clothing.
I have unfortunately recently seen an eighteen-year-old friend of my daughter's marry into one of these patriarchal groups. She has changed in so many ways that make me sad.

That they would draw ten times the attention to themselves wearing one of these into a pool than they would in a bikini? Doesn't that defeat the purpose?
