331. That's Real Common, Isn't It? |
|
I mean for a band to have a signature tune, but it not be their best work. The OP had Zep and Stairway, but i've never met a Zep fan that thought Stairway was their best song.
Probably the same thing here. A first hit, or a breakthrough hit, or one that resonates with the masses, but isn't even one of their favorites becomes the sig tune.
Reading this thread makes me think that's pretty common. The Professor

whose dictation I was transcribing. He had dictated on his own tape rather than one from the hospital. I got to the end of the last report and lo and behold, there was Eric Clapton singing "Cocaine." It was rather nice; got to hear a song I hadn't heard in a number of years and gained a whole new perspective on that rather stuffy sounding doc.
Dr. Blackthorne, if you're out there, hi. :yourock: Literally.

I would say the Genesis "signature" song would be Invisible Touch, although they have many songs I enjoyed more.
Not that I don't like "Sledgehammer", I thought it was pretty coy, really.

It fits Mike Love's ego.
"Yeah, I wrote all the songs. Not Brian Wilson, not Barry Manilow, not John & Paul, goddamn it. I, Mike Love wrote fucking everything. I am the Beach Boys! I am music you fucking peasants, and I write the songs!"
Actually those probably WERE the original lyrics. Bruce just cleaned it up a little

Maybe because it was SO overplayed on MTV in the early days, and it was such a cheesy video.
Their heavier stuff is the best: Precious, Tattooed Love Boys (especially the breakdown right in the middle), Message of Love, Middle of the Road, etc...

The lyrics are quoted here about once a week, but what the Hell.....
Gen'rals gathered in their masses, Just like witches at black masses Evil minds that plot destruction, Sorcerer of death's construction In the fields the bodies burning, As the war machine keeps turning Death and hatred to mankind, Poisoning their brainwashed minds Oh Lord Yeah!
Politicians hide themselves away They only started the war Why should they go out to fight? They leave thier role to the poor, yeah
Time will tell on their power minds, Making war just for fun Treating people just like pawns in chess, Wait 'till their judgement day comes, yeah
Now in darkness world stops turning, Ashes where the bodies burning No more War Pigs have the power, Hand of God has struck the hour Day of judgement, God is calling On their knees the war pigs crawling, Begging mercies for their sins Satan, laughing, spreads his wings Oh Lord Yeah!

252. Buffalo Springfield- For What Its Worth |
|
Edited on Wed Jun-08-05 08:51 PM by Carla in Ca
The event that served as catalyst to the formation of the Buffalo Springfield was a serendipitous encounter. In a traffic jam on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles in early April of 1966, Richie Furay and Stephen Stills, two refugees from the early sixties East Coast folk boom chanced to pull up behind a battered black 1953 Pontiac hearse bearing Ontario, Canada license plates. Stalled in rush hour traffic ahead of them sat Neil Young and Bruce Palmer, tired, broke and on their way out of town following a manic cross country journey in search of their musical dreams. That fortuitous meeting would ultimately change the face of rock music forever. Within weeks they were setting the Sunset Strip music scene on its ears and challenging all rivals.

Space Oddity all the way.
And there are a dozen other songs of his that I would list before Sound and Vision, as far as "signature song" goes.

My # 2 would be "Fame" or "Fashion"
My favorite Bowie songs though are "The Laughing Gnome".
I saw him in concert during the Sound and Vision Tour though in Dallas.

.... a tongue-in-cheek approach to this quiz.
Regardless of the fact that most people have never even heard Sound and Vision, it is one of several tracks off of his very best album ever, Low.
But, if I were to pick Bowie's signature song in the spirit of this thread, it sure would't be Space Oddity, which isn't remotely representative of his body of work or his chameleon character.
That would have to be something off of Ziggy Stardust, probably the title track :)
