Sorry, Guys. Less Skin is Back In.
Hip-hugging jeans and tight-fitting tiny tops are out. Less skin is back in for the young American.

U.S. fashion experts say a trend toward modesty is evident in new fall styles for clothing aimed at girls in their early teens, and will become more common with spring 2006 designs.

"We're seeing skirt hemlines that are at the knee and are very demure, very proper pants, prim tops and large pearl necklaces," said Gloria Baume, fashion market director for Teen Vogue. The magazine showcases fashion and photography much like its parent publication Vogue.

Baume, who said she looks to European fashion runways to spot what will be hot for American teens, said designers have been focusing on "ladylike and almost old-fashioned" styles that were inspired by the 1950s.

That would phase out the belly-baring, skintight numbers championed by the likes of Britney Spears. "There is nothing form-fitting about the latest fashions," Baume said.

Does that mean the low-rise jean fad is over?

"I hope so," said Baume. "I don't like them. That style has been around for four years and I think girls are getting tired of it."

7. Actually, that's a bad sign for the economy.
The hems typically go down in a bust.

I read about it in The Smithsonian Magazine once.

18. doesn't hold true anymore, thankfully
in the early parts of this century, hems went up to show off silk stockings during good times, and down to hide bare legs in bad times. not a reliable indicator anymore.

although one could make an argument it has something to do with whether the culture is feeling cocky or self-conscious at any given time

16. I like low-waist jeans -
The kind that that sit an inch or two below the navel. I did too much belly-baring last summer with much lower jeans, and frankly, I'm too old for that.

But I don't like high-waisted jeans either; they just make a person's middle and rear end look bigger. A nice compromise is a pair of low-waist jeans that don't require a bikini wax to wear. And a boot cut is good.

I am SO glad longer shirts are back in again, though - tank tops that hit the hip, pretty feminine shirts and camisoles that go below the hip, and polo shirts that are fitted but long.

I like to look youthful and sexy, but I don't want to look ridiculous or tarty.

25. Another in agreement here. BUT, (one T there...)
are the kiddies deciding they've had enough of the grossness or are the corporate commanders instilling the idea into the kids?

Corporations learned from the 1960s to NEVER let their target customer base think for themselves. Today's music 'artists', far more who are than are not, are corporate manufactured and all seem to look alike (Duff, Spears, Simpson, Aguilera, the list (like the beat) goes on...)

Edited on Wed Jun-08-05 03:21 PM by NewJeffCT
bare arms, short skirts, low cut tops, jiggling cleavage, etc was all around downtown Hartford today. But, Hartford isn't always the cutting edge of fashion (though, we're way ahead of Springfield, MA!), so the women here probably haven't gotten the memo yet.

28. It's about time...
You all have no idea how tough it is explaining to an 11 year old WHY she can't wear jeans that show the top of her navel. I have no problem with teenagers expressing their sexuality when they actually HAVE some to express, but this trend over the past few years to dress younger and younger girls like sexual diva's was borderline pedophilic. I have yet to hear someone rationally explain why 10 year olds need g-strings (yes, they DO make and sell them).

32. I love hip-huggers!
They are just so much more comfortable to me. I don't do the thong thing, though, nor do I wear skimpy tops. I wear, usually, hip huggers with a teeshirt, so no one has to see my ass. But, if I do wear a feminine shirt, it is usually one that is loose over my tummy, and I wear a belt to keep my pants above my crack. I just hate hate hate having pants that dig into my waist, I have a little gut and I like to let it hang comfortably over my pants, lol.

I'm glad though that the style will be going away. The way some parents let their young girls dress is disgusting to me. It is one thing for a girl 16+ to wear something a bit skimpy.... but little girls and preteens? Ugh. One of my mom's ex's has a little girl. At the point that he lived with my mom she was 7-8. This little girl wore hip huggers and tight little shirts, platform sandals, tube tops, all Britney style shit. She *idolized* Britney Spears, and her "da-da" and mom didn't see a problem with it. So I'll be happy as hell to see little girls dressing like little girls again. Shit, if I had a kid, I would let them wear hip-huggers, but they would be wearing a teeshirt that covered them up. Meh. :).
