you can only parent so much. i mean, we are told as children to be ourselves, that we are fine the way we are, etc, etc. that's all fine and good, but your parents telling you something is one thing; seeing it on television, or in other mass media is quite another. its not so much a conscious decision, as it is a subconscious one. we are pounded day after day with images of what the media defines as attractive, and as a result have twisted perceptions.

and denounce this kind of bs in their presence, live by example. it's not only about telling, it's also about "doing", IMO anyway

but when does the real imagery kick in? in shows for kids about 14-15, which is when you just can't control media intake. and limiting their exposure to media, while simultaneously telling them to think for themselves?

had lunch with friend today... we both agreed we are goddesses..who the hell cares what they think about us? Fuck plastic surgery... I earned every little darling quirk in my face. And am still beautiful ala Diane Keaton.
Feel so sorry for the young girls who feel pressured to be perfect.

4. Because men drool over Salma Hayek, and not them. |
|
They are shown every day, all the time, the "right" way to look. In magazines, in ads on tv, ads on the bus...music videos, films....
If they don't look "the right way", they feel ugly or 'less than'. And if they have the means to correct some things, why wouldn't they?

8. It's not just the man issue. |
|
Though for young women, about...13 to 24, it's a big deal.
In general, they are shown what is beautiful every day--and if they don't match that, it's a problem. Whether they're trying to attract a man, job, whatever.

9. Because people are stupid. |

And a lot of the people in this country are all sorts of shallow. I swear to God, I went to the mall today, and I saw this chick that I couldn't quit looking at and not in a good way. She was probably 5'4, probably never weighed over 100 pounds in her entire life, had boobs that preceeded her by about a foot(exaggerating here) when she walked into the room. They were VERY fake. She was wearing a white baby doll dress that accentuated her boobs. And then she had on those cork bottom heels. What was funny was the guy that was following her. He was short, fat, ugly, and I swear to God probably paid for all of it. Duckie

I had no choice in having multiple plastic surgeries on my face due to a birth defect. Why anyone would do it when there is no medical reason to, is totally beyond me.
