Were Cheech and Chong's movies ever funny? |
|
Edited on Thu Jun-09-05 04:04 PM by terrya
Did you really have to get high to watch them? I was...emphasis on was...watching "Cheech and Chong's Next Movie" on the Comedy Channel...and damn, that was unfuuny. Perhaps if I was smoking the weed I might have enjoyed it more.

When I was a teacher, my students often quoted this movie, and they had little access to weed or other too.

It was funny how they called him "Mr. Burt REE-nolds" during the press conferences though.

...but I agree, the rest of the movies seemed thrown together.
All the movies are basically skits with filler.

You didn't have to be high to watch them, but they were every stoner you knew - that's why they were funny.
Stoners used to be really, really funny. Maybe they still are?

5. Yes they are NOW funny. No, you do not have to be high... |
|
...but it helps a lot. Drunk, at least.
I also think their humor is generational. Those under say 35 may not appreciate it as much. Just like old SNLs.
I own "Up in Smoke" and "nice Dreams," prolly their two best.
The albums are also hilarious, IMO.
"Tired of that steady drip, drip drip of gonorrhea? Then call Peter Rooter!"
I was real glad to see Cheech Marin be able to resurrect himself as an actor. Chong turned out, well, less promising. LOL.

He was so horribly railroaded by the government. I cannot believe there wasn't more outrage about what was done to him.
Fortunately, he came out in great shape and seems to have had the best revenge on those prosecutorial assholes: he's living well.

8. They have their moments... |
|
... but watching Stacy Keach ham it up is worth the time waiting for the decent lines.
Part of the attraction of the movies is that there are LA inside jokes that a lot of people don't get, and, too, Cheech and Chong are a bit like the Chicano version of Amos and Andy, in that they know they're being stereotypical and they're putting that on.
They'll never reach Orson Welles' high plateau, but most of it is just good fun and, in between the clunkers, there's some cleverness.

My very favorite scene in any movie, whatsoever, is out of Cheech and Chong's Next Movie. It's the one where Chong's got a jar of urine and a bag of laundry detergent...and convinces Cheech he's really got a bag of cocaine. It can't be described. It must be seen.

The second movie my parents ever took me to see was "Cheech and Chong's NExt Movie." The first was "Animal House."
As a kid I looooved C&C. After I started smoking pot, I still liked them, but found it a bit corny. Now that I'm a straight-edge thirty-year old, I find their humor childish. But I can still quote all their movies from memory.....

|
That was back when the idea of a comedy team at a rock concert was unheard-of. Cheech & Chong opened for the Allman Brothers, and everybody pretty much thought it was going to be stupid and boring. Were we wrong! They came out, did their "smoking" and "paranoia high" routines, and they were a riot.
They were new, different, and totally unique. Their same old shtick looks pretty tired now. But back then, it was great.
