Is there a way to adequately describe what this magnificent event is about? In a word: No. I will do my best though because the place filled me with wonder and awe that will never be forgotten. A brief, but inadequate description may be that it is like a one thousand ring circus that has the feel of Mad Max and Thunderdome, Dr Seuss, Alice in Wonderland and a touch of the non-gambling aspects of the wildest parts of Las Vegas all rolled into one.

The event takes place in the Black Rock Desert of Northern Nevada about two hours north of Reno near a town called Gerlach every year for a week before Labor Day. The desert there is extremely harsh and foreboding. In the old days of wagon trains heading west, people passed through this area and nearby and many never made it past. The desert here is in a valley surrounded by two mountain ranges and the land is perfectly flat for many miles. This flat land lies on what used to be a large lake that has since evaporated leaving behind a completely lifeless beige salt bed known as the "playa." Lifeless, that is, until man intrudes to prepare for, and execute what may very well be the wildest party in the history of mankind. This is the ultimate escape.

In the next few years I have every intention of becoming Burning bound. I wanted to do it before I had my daughter (my ex was not at all interested) and I still want to go. My child is getting old enough that I could leave her w/ family for a week or so and it wouldn't become a nightmare so I hope to get there soon!

I will try really hard to go this year, but I will have a new job which could prevent my attendance. Either way, I will have a large entourage of friends going there this year. My friends include some very good house music DJs who will almost certainly be brigning their equipment. If you are serious about going, then let me know and I can help direct you to some people that are definitely going.

My friends want to get a camp spot near another camp known as "The Deep End." It is cool because they have some great electronic music during the day. The parties are super happy and fun and free drinks are given out at the bar there (everything is free at Burning Man except for ice basically because everyone gives gifts). There were a large number of very attractive people at The Deep End too and a lot of positive energy. My favorite day time activity was at The Deep End, but I am glad I discovered it late because I really toured the whole area that I might not have otherwise done!

I plan to go in a couple of years. I figure that this will give me enough time to meet local people who attend often and will get me into the local scene in general. It's always good to know people before you go into a huge scene like that. Besides, my little girl is almost 5 (will be 5 a week from today). I would feel bad about leaving her for a week or so while I was off having fun.
I figure when she is 7 she will be able to better handle me being gone for more than a night away from her. By then I hope to be prepared for the experience of a lifetime that I can eventually take her to when she is much older (maybe late teens-I think that she could learn alot from it but that she needs to be older to fully appreciate it). But the first time I'm going w/o her.
