22.  John F. Kennedy's loss is still very affecting to me, RevCheesehead.
'Was 11 in 5th grade when word came over the public address system that he had been shot in Dallas, Texas.

I had never ever seen so many grown-ups so sad or so silent.

I sure like your pick on this one. I like it a hell of a lot.

26. Thanks.
I was just a kid in diapers, myself. But I think that when he was killed, something in America died as well... and we've never recovered from it.

I was just telling someone this a.m. that when we had Kennedy (and Roosevelt), we had rich men who actually cared about the poor and less fortunate, and saw it as their duty to care for them.

Will there ever be another like him?

35. It's true -- neither of them needed the money. They were public
servants and behaved like it.

Often one of the History Channels or another cable station will run a speech of JFK's and when I hear the words and the conviction he put behind them, I feel ashamed that language is no longer regarded as a force for uplift.

Kennedy's words soared. Almost more poet than politician -- well, at least when he spoke.

37. If JFK Hadn't Been Killed...
The Vietnam war would have ended in 1964, and our involvement would
never have exceeded the small advisory role it had when JFK was in office.

The space program would have kept going and growing, as much of the
money that went into the arms race and the Vietnam war would have
gone into space exploration instead. We would have had colonies on
the moon by the mid-70's, and on Mars by now.

Instead of fighting over diminishing resources here, we would be
reaching out into space.

Without the Vietnam war, the Democrats could easily have held the
Presidency in 1968. Nixon would never have become President. We
would have several more liberals on the Supreme Court today.
